Prof. Krishna Kumar has articulated so well what most of us working in the space of early childhood education and foundational learning have felt for a long time now. He says, " Teaching is a relational activity, it's success being dependent on the student's sense of human bond with the teacher. such a sense is crucial for learning in the early stages of education. Smartboards and exposure to virtual reality can only destroy little children's innate search for bonding with the teacher." Research from across the world, including the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University has shown that young children develop in an environment of relationships. Young children learn best in an interactive and relational mode. Children who develop warm and positive relationships with their teachers are more excited about learning, more positive about coming to school, more self confident and achieve more in the classroom. An 'environment of relationships' is crucial for the development of a child's brain architecture, which lays the foundation for later outcomes such as academic performance, mental health, and interpersonal skills. Is it possible to include any digital devices and AI for young children in a peripheral manner? Without detracting from the highly central role of positive teacher-child relationship? Can this be done so that it is accessible to all children? India will probably go through this cycle of 'exciting digitalization' of early childhood classrooms before we realize that it can cause harm to the children. Countries like Sweden have now decided to remove digital devices from classrooms. We should, rather, focus on ensuring that the Balvatika classes in primary schools get dedicated teachers who are well trained in good early childhood education practices.
