  • Performance Analysis and Economic Feasibility of Fuel Cell Vehicles: A Perspective Review

    SAE International

Automotive industries have been a significant contributor to global warming over the last 30 years. Due to the excessive increase in environmental degradation, research has been conducted extensively in various fields to explore sustainable alternatives to IC engines. Automotive industries have been a significant contributor to global warming over the last 30 years. Due to the excessive increase in environmental degradation, research has been conducted extensively in various fields to explore sustainable alternatives to IC engines. Therefore, heavy emphasis is being laid on Battery-run Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEVs). BEVs are facing their own set of challenges when it comes to production, recharge time, battery capacity and net carbon footprint, among other issues. However, FCEVs offer certain new opportunities for the automobile sector to foray into a sustainable space. This study aims to review the performance of fuel cell vehicles against the parameters of economic feasibility, technological feasibility, energy efficiency. Recent developments in fuel cell research have been discussed. The feasibility of these developments corresponding to FCEV applications has been reviewed in view of the challenges to the widespread adoption of FCEVs in the automotive industry. Furthermore, the study attempts to establish FCEVs as a competent alternative to ICEVs, BEVs and PHEVs (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles) in regard to vehicle performance by comparing sample vehicles from the aforementioned categories against parameters such as Torque, Range, Ride comfort, costs and vehicular emissions. The in-depth review also determines the potential of FCEVs as a mainstream sustainable alternative and identifies the challenges and opportunities for the development of this technology for implementation in the near foreseeable future.

Wear is the damaging, gradual removal or deformation of material at solid surfaces. The material loss due to wearing of interacting surfaces is a major concern. This not only decreases the life of the components that are interacting but also lead to various hazards. A lubricant is a substance, usually organic, introduced to reduce friction between surfaces in mutual contact, which ultimately reduces the heat generated when the surfaces interact. The experiment has been carried to study the wear rates of the tribopair and effect of lubricants on it. The shaft was fabricated by using an inhouse built 3-D printer. It is performed using a shaft-bearing mechanism. This research article discusses the study of measurement of the reduction in wear in the materials Polylactic Acid and an MDF board using HP grease AP3 and Loctite Maintain as two different lubricants.

  • Design and Modelling of Single Cylinder 4 Stroke Gasoline Engine Crankshaft

The crankshaft translates the reciprocatory motion of the piston into rotary motion. A flywheel is generally connected to the crankshaft to reduce the vibrating characteristic of four stroke cycle. Counterweights are added for each reciprocating piston to provide engine balance while operating. Gasoline engines have curtailed compression ratio therefore shorter stoke length as a deduction have higher RPM in comparison to diesel counterpart. A crankshaft is subjected to enormous stresses, potentially equivalent of several tones of force. Failure of the crankshaft is predominantly due to violent vibrations, insufficient lubrication, excessively pressurized cylinder. This research aims to examine the stress subjected to acute points on a crankshaft. Three dimension model of 4 stroke single cylinder engine crankshaft is modeled using SolidWorks v18. End conditions were applied taking into consideration the engine mountings of the crankshaft. Stresses were applied to crankpin to replicate the forces of a running engine. Twisting moment causes Shear stresses; bending moment are determinant of the tensile and compressive stresses. This research was conducted for two different materials Stainless steel and Epoxy carbon fiber 230GPa woven Prepeg. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted and results for Shear stress and von-misses stresses induced in crankshaft are drawn using ANSYS v18.1 for the two materials. For validation of the model, the theoretical results for von-misses and shear stress are contrasted with the analysis result obtained. The result has been scrutinized to find out the viability of replacing stainless steel with carbon fiber as a manufacturing material for the high-performance automotive crankshaft.

  • Potential Use of Quaternary Blends of Diesel, Biodiesel, Higher Alcohol and Diethyl Ether in Compression Ignition Engine

    -

Diesel is the primary fuel for most of the compression ignition engines in the world. Its
ambient properties allow generating maximum power and energy. But it generates a lot
of pollution due to the high CO2, sulphur, NOx, PM, and hydrocarbon emissions, and is
also non - renewable. Therefore, immense research is going on to find cleaner and
renewable sources of energy. Biodiesel is one such alternative to diesel. The world’s

The world’s
biodiesel production is heavily dependent on edible oil as feedstock. Thus, there is an
urgent need to shift to non – edible sources. Waste cooking oil is a readily available
feedstock in India. It can be procured from households, restaurants, and other commercial
sources. Producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil also provides the scope for waste
management. However, neat waste cooking oil biodiesel has many issues like high
viscosity, high density, large calorific value, and decreased cold flow properties.
Therefore, blends are prepared for biodiesel with other additives to improve fuel
    properties.
In this investigation, quaternary blends of waste cooking oil biodiesel were prepared
using diesel, butanol, and diethyl ether as additives. Four quaternary blends were prepared
and their physicochemical properties like density, kinematic viscosity, calorific value,
cloud point, pour point, and carbon, hydrogen, oxygen content were evaluated. These
were compared to that of diesel, neat biodiesel, a binary blend of diesel and biodiesel, a
ternary blend of diesel, biodiesel, butanol, and a ternary blend of biodiesel, butanol,
    diethyl ether.
The physicochemical properties data of quaternary blends was consolidated. The chosen
properties were density, kinematic viscosity, and calorific value. These properties were
chosen since these are the most vital properties of a fuel and are important in the
determination of emission characteristics. Data sorting was applied in Microsoft Excel to
find the most optimal quaternary blend for usage.
