IIVR Varanasi Licenses Advanced Lobia & Okra Varieties to Boost Farmer Income The Indian Institute of Vegetable Research (IIVR), Varanasi, has licensed its advanced vegetable varieties—Kashi Nidhi (Lobia) and Kashi Sahishnu (Okra)—to Eurogreen Crop Sciences for commercial seed production. With over 129 improved varieties across 27 vegetable crops, IIVR aims to enhance farmers’ income and promote sustainable cultivation practices. These varieties are disease-resistant, reducing pesticide use, improving yield, and potentially increasing farmers’ income by 20–25%. WELL Labs, in collaboration with Prarambha, conducted a hands-on training on Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) for farmers in Raichur and Koppal districts of Karnataka. In the training, the farmers learnt to: ◘ Understand crop nutrient requirements. ◘ Identify nutrient deficiencies and learn their management techniques.  ◘ Prepare natural inputs like Jeevamrutha and Panchagavya. After the training, farmers were quick to begin preparing and using natural agricultural inputs in their fields to improve crop health, soil fertility, and sustainable farming practices. A high-level ISMA delegation, led by Shri Ashwini Srivastava, Joint Secretary (Sugar), Department Of Food And Public Distribution, visited EID Parry’s Nellikuppam Sugar Mill and the Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Coimbatore, on 25–26 August 2025. The visit focused on accelerating cane variety breeding, genome editing, and AI-enabled solutions, with the aim of developing a joint industry research breeding programme that involves direct mill participation in varietal selection. The delegation also drew valuable learnings from global best practices and gained insights into advanced R&D in sugarcane breeding, biotechnology, agronomy, and sustainable practices. Changing the Narrative: Reframing the Private Sector’s Role in Indian Agriculture #©VamsiKrishnaC Recently, in an institutional interaction, a senior professional stated - “You in the private sector are looting farmers and minting money.” Such remarks deeply disturbed me, as they overlook the years of innovation, investment & shared value creation that many private sector professionals had- have and are championing with & for farmers. Progress in Indian agriculture rests on the strength of partnerships that includes farmers, public institutions & the private sector, each playing a pivotal role. Yet, despite decades of substantial contribution, private agribusiness professionals are too often mischaracterized by some institutions as "looting" farmers. This perception not only distorts reality but also risks undermining the trust needed for genuine progress. Let’s set the record straight: #©VamsiKrishnaC → Collaborative Growth: Private sector experts introduce world-class technologies, support efficient farm-to-market linkages, and provide essential inputs that drive higher incomes and better yields for millions. → Empowering Farmers: Through education, skills training, and market access, private companies ensure farmers become prosperous stakeholders in the value chain & not victims. → Debunking the Myth: Portraying private enterprises as adversaries is outdated and counterproductive. In truth, many agri-businesses are genuine partners invested in rural upliftment, innovation, and food security. It’s time for institutions to embrace collaboration over confrontation and recognize that the prosperity of Indian farming depends on unified, respectful engagement. Myths of exploitation must give way to transparency, shared accountability and a vision for sustainable growth. To Debunk the Myth, the best way forward is for the institutions to work constructively with the private sector in PPP(Public Private Partnership) mode by Co-designing agri-projects that leverage government policy frameworks and public infrastructure with private sector innovation, investment and technical expertise to deliver solutions that directly benefit farmers. For Indian agriculture to flourish, we must give the private sector the trust and respect it deserves.
