TRAI’s recommendations on digital radio are a long-awaited and progressive step toward a digital-first future for Indian radio. The move to identify new spot frequencies in major cities, allow simulcast operations and adopt a single digital standard will unlock innovation and new content opportunities. While the vision is strong, timely execution and realistic pricing, particularly ensuring that the reserve price for bids reflects current FM revenue trends rather than past auction patterns, will be key to success. Ensuring the availability of digital receivers in cars and phones will also be critical for adoption.
