𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐚 𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 — 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐮𝐳𝐳𝐥𝐞? From massive data centres to AI compute clusters, digital infrastructure is scaling fast. But one foundational layer still isn’t getting the policy attention it deserves: interconnection infrastructure. At DE-CIX India, we operate country’s largest Interconnection Platform across Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, powering the country’s digital growth and enabling ISPs, enterprises, and content providers to interconnect with unmatched reliability, scalability, and ease of business. Yet, despite its critical role, interconnection is still missing from national frameworks like the National Infrastructure Pipeline and the Draft Data Center Policy. To truly strengthen India’s digital backbone, incentive structures, and a defined deployment roadmap are essential. A strong Public-Private Partnership can further unlock nationwide connectivity and accelerate the country’s digital future. 💡 𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫? Interconnection Platforms allow networks, CDNs, cloud platforms, and enterprises to exchange data locally instead of routing it through distant or international transit paths. This reduces latency, improves performance, and keeps costs in check, critical for use cases like streaming, gaming, AI, and enterprise workloads. But when interconnection remains limited to metros, regional data centers in cities like Pune, Ahmedabad, and Jaipur are forced to route traffic through far-off exchanges, adding unnecessary delay. India’s AI market is projected to hit $17 billion by 2027 (Nasscom–BCG). Real-time data movement will only become more critical. Today, enterprises increasingly ask us for interconnection in Tier 2 cities. While compute infrastructure is growing there, availability of 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐮𝐩. In our conversations with government policymakers, we emphasise that the time has come to recognise interconnection as part of a Public-Private Partnership, a step that will accelerate the reach of digital infrastructure across India’s diverse geography. 🟢 It’s time for Internet Exchanges to be given their rightful place in driving the nation’s digital transformation journey. ✅ Data movement needs to be as local as compute infrastructure. ✅ Interconnection must be part of India’s digital infrastructure agenda. For this analysis, I’ve focused on mobility-related revenues – primarily from UASL (legacy Unified Access Service License), UL (Unified License), and UL-Access (Access Services under UL). 👉 Virtual operators (VNOs), NLD/ILD long-distance traffic, and satellite/specialized segments are excluded here to keep the focus on core wireless mobility. 📊 Key Highlights from Q1 FY25-26 🔹 Reliance Jio – The Consistent Front-Runner GR: ₹32,795 Cr | AGR: ₹30,291 Cr RMS (GR): 42.4% | RMS (AGR): 45.1% Circle leadership: MP & CG (63%), Odisha (55%), Gujarat (53%) ✅ Strategy shift towards high-ARPU air-fiber & bundled services is driving AGR dominance. 🔹 Bharti Airtel – Strong Challenger GR: ₹28,675 Cr | AGR: ₹27,048 Cr RMS (GR): 37.0% | RMS (AGR): 40.2% Stronghold circles: Karnataka (56%), North East (58%), Delhi (49%) 📡 Airtel’s focus on enterprise + premium mobility is reflecting in stronger AGR share. 🔹 Vodafone Idea (VI) – Cautious Optimism GR: ₹12,382 Cr | AGR: ₹7,803 Cr RMS (GR): 16.0% | RMS (AGR): 11.6% Despite customer market share declines, quarterly revenues improved, showing signs of resilience in Mumbai & Kerala. 🔹 BSNL – Struggling for Relevance GR: ₹3,579 Cr | AGR: ₹2,060 Cr AGR RMS: 3.1% (national) The gap with private players widens further, highlighting the need for faster 4G/5G rollout & monetization strategy. 🎯 Insights Beyond Numbers Local leadership matters – Circles with sharper on-ground execution (like Jio in MP/CG or Airtel in Karnataka) show disproportionate AGR dominance. Market dynamics are shifting – It’s no longer about SIM acquisition alone. The play is moving towards high-ARPU customers via fibre, enterprise, and premium bundles. Interesting anomalies – Delhi, Mumbai, Rajasthan → Jio leads in customer share but lags in revenue share. Himachal Pradesh → Jio dominates RMS but not customer market share, showing how ARPU uplift beats raw subscriber count. 📌 Takeaway: The next wave of competition will be less about customer acquisition and more about value-driven monetization.
