A candidate spent 2 years, solved 500 DSA problems, and still failed to clear Google’s interviews. A candidate spent 2.5 years, solved 1000 DSA problems, and still failed to clear Amazon’s interviews. Meanwhile, A candidate only solved 325 problems, spent 1 year, and managed to land offers from Atlassian, Google, and Microsoft. So, was the 3rd candidate born with 200 IQ, and all others were not capable? Nope, it was the difference in approach that ultimately brought the difference in results. Most students think they struggle with DSA because their logic is weak or because they haven’t done 1000s of problems. But in reality, it’s usually their approach that’s off. A person who does pattern-based learning >>> will always win when compared to one who doesn’t because: - they will know what the theme of the problem is in 3 mins - In the next 15 mins, they would’ve already mapped out a solution - by the end of the interview, they would’ve passed with flying colors and solved 2 Hard/Medium problems And all of that without panic, or going blank, thinking what this problem is even though they’ve never seen it before. Interview Experience #2 Amazon SDE 1 Interview Experience Recently, I got the chance to interview with Amazon. Round 1 – Online Assessment (OA) Consisted of 2 DSA problems + Workstyle assessment. Tip: Don’t take the workstyle part lightly , it’s based on Amazon’s Leadership Principles and is very important to get interview round. Round 2 – Technical Interview First question: traversal (could do both DFS & BFS). Then, I was asked about time & space complexity and the reasoning behind it. (LC Medium) Second question: sorting → I explained merge sort with proof of complexity. . (LC Medium) Round 3 – Technical Interview (a surprising one!) Question 1: Monotonic stack problem. (LC Medium leve) Question 2: Priority queue -based problem (LC hard level). Both were solved successfully. After the technical part, the interviewer casually asked about my hobbies. Since I love singing & guitar 🎸, he surprised me by asking me to perform in the interview itself! This was such a wholesome and unexpected moment that made the round memorable. DSA Tip: 1. Before interviews, try solving hard-level problems (LeetCode/Codeforces). It makes medium-level interview problems feel easier and keeps your brain sharp under pressure. 2. Revise all the concepts you know. Round 4 – Hiring Manager / Leadership Round 1. Some system design discussions. 2. A few basic CS subjects questions. 3. Ended with 2 Leadership Principle discussions. Tip: Prepare Amazon’s Leadership Principles well. Make 2–3 strong stories from your work or projects that highlight ownership, teamwork, and problem-solving. From doing BCA in a Tier-3 college without any support or coding culture to cracking Amazon (30 LPA+) just 2 years later on his own...Vaibhav's story will teach you a lot. In 2020: Vaibhav Dangayach graduated from his BCA from a Tier-3 college, decided not to pursue MCA, and went on to build his skills. Just 2 years later, in 2022, He managed to crack Amazon as (his position) I recently had him over on my podcast, and I asked him his exact approach that he followed for Amazon. This was it:  1. Ruthless focus on DSA – Vaibhav’s first 12 months after BCA = pure DSA grind. – Picked one language (C++) and went all in. – Every single day: solved LeetCode & SDE Sheet questions.   → Not random practice, but pattern-based prep.   → Focused on arrays, strings, trees, graphs, DP, stacks/queues. – Target: Finish the entire SDE sheet before even thinking about Amazon. Mock Interviews & Speed Under Pressure – Joined online mock interview sessions & practiced timed coding rounds. – Simulated the exact Amazon environment:   → Solved 2-3 medium/hard questions back-to-back, no peeking at solutions.   → After each session, did a ruthless self-review:   * Where did I get stuck?   * Which patterns do I still fumble?   * Which topics kill my speed? – Weekly routine: 1–2 mock interviews with peers and checking back on his progress.  3. Projects & Resume – Didn’t spam the resume with college projects. – Picked 1–2 strong development projects:   → Deployed real apps, showed end-to-end ownership (not half-baked clones).   → Added GitHub links, wrote clear READMEs, included system design basics. – For Amazon, resume is your first filter.   → Highlighted only what mattered: skills, projects, impact.  4. Smart Application Strategy – Didn’t wait for campus drives (there weren’t any). –Applied everywhere off-campus: Amazon careers, LinkedIn, referrals, even via coding contests. – Built connections: reached out to employees for referrals, but only after having a solid resume + LeetCode profile to show. –  Not once was he asked about his BCA, CGPA, or MCA. – Every interviewer cared only about:   → Can you solve problems?   → Can you explain your code?   → Have you built anything real? – All that matters: your DSA, your projects, your interview skills. Microsoft pays around 20–35 LPA for SDE-1, and will always start your process with a DSA round before anything else. Amazon pays around 20–40 LPA for SDE-1, and yes, your first step is always a DSA screening round. Uber, Stripe, and Google all offer between 25-45 LPA for SDE-1. They, too, use a DSA round as the gatekeeper for interviews. Entry to every top company starts with a simple filter: A 45–60 minute DSA round where you solve 2–3 coding problems. That’s it. 80% of people get filtered out right here, not because they aren’t smart, but because they never trained for: – Speed under pressure – Pattern recognition – Clean, explainable solutions Nobody cares how good you could be.
