Technip Energies India Limited has secured the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) contract from BPCL for the procurement and installation of additional induced draft (ID) and forced draft (FD) fans at the hydrogen generation unit (HGU) in Bina Refinery, Madhya Pradesh. The scope of work includes design & detail engineering, planning & scheduling, tender preparation for equipment, inspection, expediting of materials, supervision of construction, commissioning assistance, and project closeout. Technip emerged as the L1 bidder with a bid of ₹6.35 crore, while Prism Infratech was disqualified during technical evaluation. GST Reforms & Renewables: Will India Choose Affordability or Alignment? When GST was launched, at the beginning the government placed most renewable energy devices under a 5% concessional rate. (Chapter ID 84,85,94) This was done to keep solar panels, wind turbines, and other clean-tech items affordable and support early adoption. But the low 5% rate created an inverted duty structure, since most inputs like glass, steel, and inverters attracted 18% or even 28% GST. Developers ended up with blocked input credits, hurting cash flows and raising the true cost of projects. To correct this, the GST Council in 2021 decided to raise the rate to 12%. This narrowed the gap between inputs and outputs, partially resolving the credit mismatch. Further, for EPC projects, the government also introduced a 70:30 ratio wherein 70% value treated as supply of goods and taxed at the applicable GST rate (5 or 12), while 30% treated as supply of services taxed at 18%. So when GST was 5%, the effective blended rate was around 8.9%, and after the move to 12%, the effective rate rose to nearly 13.8%. Now, with Hon’ble PM Modi’s announcement of next-generation GST reforms, the 12% slab itself will be scrapped. This raises a crucial question – will renewable equipment shift down to 5% or up to 18%? If it goes to 5%, projects may look cheaper on paper, but the old inverted duty problem will come back. If it goes to 18%, costs for solar panels, wind turbines, and inverters will rise, but tax credits will fully align. For developers and EPC players, this means a direct impact on project economics. And for India’s big picture, our target of 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net-zero by 2070. Higher GST could be a speed bump that needs offsetting via policy support or subsidies. In short, current GST reforms are more than just tax rate changes but they will directly influence how fast India can scale its clean energy mission. What are your thoughts on this?
