💡Navigating the Indian Market: Insights from Anand Gupta This morning, our Lead Portfolio Manager for Indian Equities, Anand Gupta,CFA, joined John Patrick (JP) Ong on CNBC Asia to share his latest views on the Indian market, the impact of H-1B visa policies, and why he sees compelling opportunities in Indian equities. 🔍Market Outlook & Economic Momentum Anand remains constructive on Indian equities, anticipating continued earnings growth and GDP acceleration. He noted that India has delivered 10%+ earnings CAGR and 6%+ GDP growth over the past decade - a trend he expects to continue. Recent policy shifts, including the reversals of risk management and liquidity tightening measures by the Indian government, along with consumption stimulus initiatives like GST reforms and income tax cuts and, are contributing to this positive outlook. 📈Earnings Transmission: What to Expect Anand noted that macro developments, such as GST reforms and GDP upgrades, typically take about six months to influence corporate earnings. He is confident that the market will soon see the benefit from these reforms, with signs of recovery already emerging in the rural economy and various sectors. Recent upgrades from agencies like S&P and OECD also indicate positive impacts on the economy. Anand expects a re-acceleration in corporate earnings within the next two quarters, despite current earnings lagging due to bank net interest margin compression and geopolitical tensions. 🌐H-1B Visa: Limited Long-Term Impact on IT While the H-1B visa issue has drawn attention, Anand believes it poses limited long-term risk to Indian IT. Over the past decade, Indian IT services have reshaped their business model, raising local onshore U.S. hiring from 6% to 18%. Even if H-1B usage were to fall to zero, only about a 5% increase in local hiring would be required, taking the proportion of U.S. locals to around 23%. This adjustment is estimated to have just a ~3% impact on earnings per share. Moreover, with about 70% of IT services still delivered offshore, the sector’s strong offshore base further insulates it from risks tied to local hiring constraints, underscoring its resilience. 💰Valuations: A Rare Opportunity Anand pointed out that the price-to-book ratio of MSCI India relative to MSCI ACWI is near a 15-year low, almost two standard deviations below its long-term average. Furthermore, India's Price-to-Earnings Growth (PEG) ratio is now more aligned with other Asian markets.
