We are proud to begin our strategic research collaboration with the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) as we look to advance the case for customized and sustainable fertilization practices in India. This effort is a key part of our mission to empower farmers, protect soil health, and address current challenges, including soil degradation and the adverse impacts of climate change. 🌱 Biostimulants: Clean, Green & Export Ready – Shaping India’s Future in Sustainable Agriculture 🌱 India’s biostimulant sector is passing through a decisive phase. On one hand, it has been a proud moment to see biostimulants officially recognized under the Fertiliser Control Order (FCO, 1985), marking a new chapter of formal regulation. On the other hand, the journey ahead is filled with both opportunities and challenges that will define the sector’s future. Globally, the biostimulant market is expanding rapidly, projected to grow from USD 6 billion in 2024 to more than USD 10 billion by 2030. India has all the right ingredients to become a global leader in this space. With a coastline of 7,500 km that enables large-scale seaweed cultivation, lignite-rich belts for humic acid extraction, vast microbial diversity for soil and crop resilience, and a strong MSME ecosystem backed by ICAR and CSIR, the foundation is strong and promising. Yet, several challenges persist. High product registration costs of more than ₹30 lakh, GST irregularities, and brand-based notifications limit fair competition and discourage innovation. Many state agriculture departments are still struggling with clarity on laboratory requirements, manpower, and A2 certifications. Testing infrastructure remains insufficient; if 30,000 applications move towards bio-efficacy trials, our universities simply do not have the capacity. Moreover, the Biostimulant Cell requires deeper scientific expertise in plant physiology and biochemistry to provide the right direction. To unlock this sector’s true potential, decisive policy alignment is the need of the hour. Uniform 5% GST across all biostimulant categories, registration subsidies for MSMEs, discounted testing support from agricultural universities, and clear generic classification without brand bias can change the game. The tolerance limit, which is scientifically unfeasible for natural extracts, should be reconsidered. Beyond this, India needs a comprehensive National Biostimulant Policy, stronger public–private partnerships, and a Joint Task Force across ministries and scientific institutions to streamline efforts. Biostimulants are more than just agri-inputs. They represent sustainability, resilience, and opportunity. With the right support, India can position itself as a global leader under the vision of “Make in India, Grow for the World”—ensuring that biostimulants remain clean, green, and export ready. 💡 What’s your view?
