During the #WBGMeetings, we marked an important milestone with the signing today of a $20 million loan agreement with the Bank of Bhutan in the presence of Honorable Lekey Dorji, Bhutan’s Minister of Finance, Mr. Dasho Penjore, Governor of the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, and Mr. Tshering Tenzin, CEO of the Bank of Bhutan. This marks IFC - International Finance Corporation’s first debt investment in a financial institution in #Bhutan. It aims to expand access to finance for micro and small enterprises. Strengthening the financial sector in this way is vital to enabling business growth, creating jobs, and reducing poverty. Today at #WBGMeetings, I had the pleasure of opening the session on Tourism for Jobs, Livelihoods, and Growth, alongside ministers and private sector leaders from around the world. Tourism is much more than leisure — it’s one of the world’s most powerful engines for inclusive and sustainable growth, supporting 1 in 10 jobs globally. In many developing countries, it accounts for over half of all service exports. Behind these numbers are communities, entrepreneurs, and cultural stewards turning local identity into global opportunity. At IFC - International Finance Corporation and The World Bank Group, we’re helping strengthen the sector by improving infrastructure, building local supply chains, developing skills, and leveraging cultural heritage. In Cape Verde, where tourism makes up a quarter of GDP, we’re supporting diversification into rural and cultural tourism — and have invested in the airports connecting the archipelago to the world. Similar efforts are revitalizing historic towns in Albania, linking conservation and livelihoods across Africa, and expanding SME participation through hotel investments. IFC - International Finance Corporation and the Bank of Bhutan have partnered on a landmark US$20 million investment — the first foreign debt investment in Bhutan’s banking sector under revised External Commercial Borrowing guidelines.
