Icelandic Geothermal Expertise in Focus at IIGCE Jakarta. From September 17–19, Icelandic companies showcased their expertise at the 11th @IIGCE Geothermal Conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, under the Green by Iceland banner. GeoSilica Iceland, COWI, Verkís Consulting Engineers, Iceland Drilling Company Ltd (Jarðboranir), HD Industrial & Technical Services, and ÍSOR (Iceland GeoSurvey) collaborated at a shared booth, drawing intense interest in Iceland's geothermal know-how. Indonesia, with vast geothermal resources and a population of nearly 300 million, is working to expand its use of renewable energy for sustainable growth. Ties with Iceland continue to deepen, from the GRÓ Geothermal Training Programme under the auspices of UNESCO to new collaboration agreements announced this year. By working (and training) together, Iceland and Indonesia can harness their geothermal potential to drive major sustainable progress. Still high after yesterday’s successful life science event at Venture Café Cambridge. Having the opportunity to present life sciences in Iceland to 100+ people in the world’s center of innovation is something else. Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir Buch, Ph.D excelled in her key note presentation, where she mixed data from her report for Reykjavik Science City with success stories of Icelandic solutions that have worldwide impact. Tristan Elisabeth Gribbin added a unique perspective on Iceland as a place where innovation, wellness, and creativity intersect, while Bergur Ebbi brilliantly tied the program together. Big thanks to the Venture Café team; Alexander Cheung, Tricia Bitetto and Nathan Plummer, our friend José Ramos and my colleague Daði Guðjónsson and his team who helped make this happen.

Yesterday in Boston, we had the privilege of introducing Iceland’s life sciences to one of the world’s most important biotech hubs. The marketing initative Reykjavik Science City, led by Business Iceland, hosted a session at Venture Café highlighting Iceland’s growing strengths in health tech, biotech, medtech, and pharma. Sandra Mjoll Jonsdottir Buch, Ph.D gave a fantastic presentation, weaving together stories from companies like Kerecis and ORF Genetics that show how Icelandic innovation is reaching patients and consumers worldwide. Erna Bjornsdottir spoke about the broader ecosystem and how collaboration is driving progress. Tristan Elizabeth Gribbin added a unique perspective on Iceland as a place where innovation, wellness, and creativity intersect, while Bergur Ebbi brought cultural context and connected life sciences to Iceland’s broader story of innovation and identity. The room was full, and the energy reminded us why Boston is such a key place to share these stories — sitting next to powerhouse institutions like MIT and Harvard, where so much of the global conversation on biotech and innovation happens. A special shout out and thanks to José Ramos for helping us making this happen! For us at Business Iceland, this event was an important step in showcasing the opportunities Iceland offers in life sciences. And it’s just the beginning — more storytelling, content, and international outreach is on the way.

The City of Reykjavik is officially among the Top 10 most sustainable destinations according to the Global Destination Sustainability Movement (GDS-Movement) GDS Index! This year Reykjavík received its highest-ever score climbing from 17th to 10th place out of 81 destinations worldwide. In partnership with The City of Reykjavik - Visit Reykjavik / Markaðsstofa höfuðborgarsvæðisins - Visit Iceland - Business Iceland - Green by Iceland - Iceland Tourism Cluster - Icelandic Travel Industry Association | Samtök ferðaþjónustunnar - Ferðamálastofa / Icelandic Tourist Board - Hæfnisetur ferðaþjónustunnar Highlights from 2025: ✔️ Reykjavík ranks 1st in the “Community” category (92.11), alongside Helsinki, Gothenburg, and Singapore. ✔️ We also shine in the “Suppliers” category, placing 4th globally (88.46). ✔️ Among medium-sized participating cities, Reykjavík proudly sits in 5th place. The GDS-Index measures sustainability across four areas: environment, community, suppliers, and destination management. It’s aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), with support from UNWTO. For the second year in a row, Helsinki ranks first in the GDS Sustainability Index, ahead of Gothenburg and Copenhagen, and these cities are truly excellent role models that provide both inspiration and encouragement. We are proud to share that the Nordic Pavilion - EXPO 2025 Osaka has been awarded the gold medal for Best Exhibit / Display at the World Expolympics from The Experiential Design Authority. This recognition reflects the strength of Nordic collaboration and innovation. The exhibition was led by Icelandic design studio Gagarín, in collaboration with Kvorning ApS (Denmark) and RINTALA EGGERTSSON ARKITEKTER LTD (Norway/Iceland). The immersive experience also featured contributions from Icelandic musicians Sin Fang and Kjartan Holm. Together, this talented group created a powerful expression of Nordic values, modern societies, and our deep connection to nature. A huge thank you to everyone who made this vision a reality. From Catch to Cuisine! From the deep waters of Iceland to the plates of Southern Europe! We recently hosted three talented young culinary students from Spain, Portugal, and Italy, the winners of the Concurso de Escuelas Culinarias Bacalao de Islandia (CECBI) competition. Their five-day adventure was a true journey of discovery, centered around the magic of Icelandic fish. They experienced everything from deep-sea fishing to a magnificent feast of saltfish. This trip not only celebrated their culinary skills but also highlighted the vital centuries-old connection between Icelandic producers and chefs across Europe. These young chefs are now our new ambassadors, bringing fresh ideas and a taste of Iceland back to their home countries. A big thank you to our partners and everyone who made this possible! Iceland made its strongest showing yet at TechBBQ Copenhagen 2025, with more than 50 companies, funds, and ecosystem partners showcasing the country’s fast-growing innovation sector.   In collaboration with KLAK - Icelandic Startups, Business Iceland hosted a dedicated booth where guests could experience Icelandic ingenuity and connect directly with founders and investors shaping the future.   A big thank-you to everyone who joined us in highlighting Icelandic innovation on the international stage.
