Ever wondered how communities can actually escape poverty? Our findings show that when investments target value chains in their entirety, the economic landscape of entire communities is strengthened – creating jobs and livelihood opportunities. With strong private sector engagement, these results multiply, linking producers directly to opportunities and lasting growth. 📰 Read our latest newsletter to learn more.

On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, we shine a spotlight on the investments that have empowered entire communities – providing opportunities and fostering growth in the world’s rural areas, where poverty is deeply entrenched. IFAD investments have a triple impact on communities: they bring bigger yields, better access to markets and higher incomes. When it comes to raising incomes, IFAD investments truly leverage the power of private-sector engagement ⬇️ An analysis of the impact assessments of 58 IFAD-financed projects showed that investment in value chains – including all the small and medium-sized businesses involved at various stages of food production, processing and marketing – strengthens the entire economic landscape and creates jobs and livelihood opportunities, all while improving incomes for food producers. We found that projects with no value chain development component, and thus no private sector engagement, boosted incomes by 16 per cent. The incorporation of limited private sector involvement in value chains doubled that increase to 33 per cent. And where private sector engagement was strong, the boost doubled again, with incomes rising 64 per cent. Read more ➡️ https://bit.ly/4hdse6x #EndPoverty

On #RuralWomensDay, let's celebrate the women around the world whose small rural businesses are boosting their economies while making high-quality food available to their communities. Despite producing much of the food we consume, rural people often struggle to access sufficient nutritious food themselves. With support from IFAD-funded projects, rural women are working hard to change this. Read more at ➡️ https://ow.ly/oJtV50XbREP

At the World Agri-Food Innovation Conference in #Beijing, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Vice President Gérardine Mukeshimana called for greater investment in community-driven innovation to advance global #foodsecurity and #rural resilience. She highlighted that when rural people are empowered to experiment, adapt, and share what works in their own contexts, they can turn challenges into new opportunities and #sustainable livelihoods. “#Innovation flourishes when farmers are in the driver’s seat,” she said. “At IFAD, we stand beside them — not as financiers from afar, but as partners in learning and scaling.” The China-IFAD South-South & Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) Facility, established in 2018 in Bejing, is a crucial mechanism for this partnership, sharing knowledge, technology and learning across 20 projects in 38 developing countries. Drawing on its work across 100 countries, IFAD continues to promote #affordable, #adaptable, and #scalable innovations emerging from the Global South — ensuring that farmers and rural communities remain at the heart of transforming #agrifood systems for a more resilient future. 📢 IFAD pledged to reach at least 70 million small-scale farmers and significantly transform their lives by increasing their incomes, productive capacity and market access by 2030 as part of the World Bank's AgriConnect initiative. Mission AgriConnect is a new World Bank Group initiative designed to create jobs in agribusiness, transform the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers globally and strengthen global food security. 🗣️“IFAD investments have led to higher incomes, bigger yields, and better market access for small-scale food producers. Delivering that triple impact, we will target at least 70 million people in rural and fragile areas,” said Lario at the event. Our own experience shows that investing in deep rural areas can be transformational, with many IFAD projects leading to an income gain of 50% for farmers, according to the latest IFAD Impact assessment.
