Yemen is now the world's third biggest food crisis, with half of its population facing hunger, and nearly half of all children under five suffering from chronic malnutrition. By early 2026, over 18 million people across Yemen are expected to face crisis levels of hunger, including approximately 41,000 at risk of famine. Across the country, families are now being driven into impossible choices — parents are skipping meals so their children can eat, selling off land, livestock, or their few belongings just to survive. As a mother from Al Dhale’ shared: “There are days when I send my daughter to her grandfather’s house just so she can eat, while I go without. On other days, we eat just bread and drink tea. As a mother, it breaks me.” Conflict, economic collapse, climate shocks and water scarcity are pushing Yemen towards famine. Unprecedented global aid cuts in 2025 have further driven hunger and child malnutrition to deadly levels. Funding cuts have forced the shutdown of over 2,800 lifesaving treatment services, representing nearly half of all lifesaving nutrition programming. On #WorldFoodDay, we signed a joint statement with other international organizations working in Yemen. Read here: https://lnkd.in/dFw7XSNG

🔴 Reports indicate that renewed fighting and subsequent airstrikes have contributed to a rapid deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the border districts of Spin Boldak and Shorabak in Kandahar Province. INTERSOS teams working in Kandahar Province immediately mobilised to respond within our operational areas. A rapid response team was deployed to Spin Boldak to support local health facilities, many of which were quickly overwhelmed by the influx of injured people. Two INTERSOS ambulances and medical staff are currently working alongside health personnel to provide emergency medical care and first aid services. Following additional incidents near the district hospital, critically injured patients were stabilised and transferred to Mirwais Regional Hospital in Kandahar for further treatment. Our teams continue to assess needs on the ground and are prepared to scale up support if required, prioritising the most vulnerable in line with humanitarian principles. INTERSOS reiterates the urgent need to protect civilians and ensure uninterrupted access to medical care. We hope that the announced ceasefire will hold and that all parties will take steps to prevent further harm to communities already affected by conflict and instability''.

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the fourth edition of the HUMANITARIAN CONGRESS — to all speakers and panellists who, through their insights and experiences, contributed to an open and necessary reflection on the transformations of the humanitarian system. From the discussions throughout the day — from the operational and principled dilemmas shaping today’s humanitarian action to the challenges of sustainability and new funding models — it became clear that the future demands collaboration, innovation, and the courage to rethink practices and tools. Together with the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, our academic partner, and thanks to the contribution of experts, researchers, and practitioners, we are opening a shared path to strengthen dialogue between the humanitarian, academic, and institutional worlds. INTERSOS will continue to promote spaces of reflection like this one, to build responses that are ever more principled, effective, and centred on the people we assist.

Deepika Seneweera is a human resources coordinator in Afghanistan. In her role, she coordinates personnel management in a complex country. Deepika explains the main skills required for this career path, including the ability to listen to others, empathy, adaptability to different contexts, and managing employees with care and attention. Her extensive experience in the humanitarian field has led her to travel and learn about different, complex contexts, which have strengthened her skills. In Afghanistan, her work is even more complicated due to restrictive policies that harm women. However, Deepika explains that this represents a challenge for her in helping other Afghan women who work for INTERSOS, given that she is a woman herself.

In Afghanistan, September ended with an internet shutdown imposed by the authorities. But the disruption of communications is only the latest sign of a crisis that has been unfolding for a long time. Millions of people forcibly returned from Pakistan and Iran, devastating earthquakes, a collapsing health system and lack of resources: overlapping crises that compound each other, making daily life increasingly difficult. We have reported on what is happening in a dedicated article on our website. Read the full story at the link in the first comment ⬇ Pics of Hasib Hazinyar (MA)
