This week, the Plastic Smart Ports team visited the two Turkish pilot ports of Foça and Mordoğan to meet with local fishing communities and tourist operators about current plastic waste practices and possible improvements. Beyond its visual impact, plastic waste poses hazards not only to endangered marine species, but also to fishers, divers, tourists and local communities. Over the next 3 years, #WWFMediterranean together with Universität Rostock,WWF North Africa, WWF-Türkiye and Enaleia will work to transform fisheries and tourist harbours in Türkiye and Tunisia into hubs of innovation, sustainability, and marine protection by: ♻️ cutting single-use plastics 🔁 improving reuse and recycling 🌊 developing plastic circular economy models for ports across the Mediterranean 💡 advancing policy and finance solutions for long-term sustainability. The 3-year Plastic Smart Ports project is funded by the German Ministry for Environment/ZUG. 🔗 Learn more: www.plasticsmartports.org #PlasticSmartPorts #Mediterranean #SustainableFisheries #SustainableTourism #CircularEconomy https://lnkd.in/d66C8aDA

Over the past decades, marine litter has become an increasingly visible problem for marine wildlife, polluting beaches, coastlines d the open sea. 🐢 🌊 Beyond its visual impact, plastic waste poses hazards not only to endangered marine species, but also to fishers, divers, tourists and local communities. In İzmir, Türkiye, we launched the new @PlasticSmartPorts project to transform fisheries and tourist harbours in Türkiye and Tunisia into hubs of innovation, sustainability, and marine protection. 💡 Universität Rostock, WWF Mediterranean, WWF-Türkiye, WWF North Africa, and Enaleia will work together to tackle #plasticpollution by: ♻️ cutting single-use plastics 🔁 improving reuse and recycling 🌊 developing plastic circular economy models for ports across the Mediterranean 💡 advancing policy and finance solutions for long-term sustainability. Did you know that sharks can sense the Earth’s magnetic field? 🧭 Researchers believe that some species, like the blue shark (Prionace glauca), can use this incredible sense to navigate across thousands of kilometers during their migrations. But despite their fascinating abilities, #sharks are under threat. Destructive fishing practices, plastic pollution, and bycatch are putting these essential predators and the health of our oceans at serious risk. 🦈 Sharks play a vital role in keeping marine ecosystems balanced. That’s why WWF Mediterranean is working with local communities and fishers to protect them and promote sustainable solutions. 👉 Interested in this topic? WWF-Türkiye and WORLD ROWING | International Rowing Federation came together in Antalya as part of the global Healthy Waters Alliance and the BlueMissionMed project. 🚣 We rowed across our seas during the European Rowing Championships, and at sunset, we adopted a beach where the Manavgat River meets the Mediterranean. We were surprised by the level of pollution in this delicate area, which is a nesting site for sea turtles. In just one hour, athletes , volunteers and DEKAFOK Kıyı Koruma Derneği collected over 60 kilograms of waste along a 100-meter strip, including 150 plastic bottles, 15 kilograms of rubber, and 4 kilograms of sunglasses. To contribute to the analysis of waste polluting our shores, the records were uploaded to the database of our pioneering program Adopt a Beach, which aims to combat plastic pollution through citizen science. 🏅 Athletes are not only champions in sport, but also in protecting our oceans. 🌊 Every step ripples into change against plastic pollution. Join us to adopt a beach, record plastic pollution and be a part of the movement to protect nature! #adoptabeach #plasticpollution #mediterranean

It's no secret. Our ocean is in trouble – up to 90% of Europe’s marine area is estimated to be under pressure from human activities. But marine life, like all nature, can and does bounce back. And the road to recovery starts with strong laws 💪 Next year we expect to get eyes on the EU's first #OceanAct. It could be a real game-changer, delivering ambitious and legally binding protection for our ocean. Together with other NGOs, WWF is ready to contribute, building on our Blue Manifesto roadmap to a healthy ocean. Read through it now and repost if you want binding action to protect and restore our ocean 💙 🖇️ https://lnkd.in/eRCTtxWW #EUOceanWeek #OurOcean

Today, on #WorldMentalHealthDay, we are reminded of the importance of taking care of our minds and of the #environments that help us feel grounded, calm, and connected. 🪸 Spending time in nature, for example near the #sea, can offer moments of clarity, peace, and emotional reset. For many, the sea represents a space to reconnect, to reflect and to feel part of something bigger. 🖇️ In this sense, protecting nature becomes not only an environmental commitment, but also a way of supporting human well-being.
