    The aim with this project is to gain further knowledge on spray formation dynamics of diesel fuel injection by means of a detailed investigation of the near-field behavior of a production injector for heavy-duty automotive applications.

    The aim with this project is to gain further knowledge on spray formation dynamics of diesel fuel injection by means of a detailed investigation of the near-field behavior of a production injector for heavy-duty automotive applications.

    A thorough understanding of diesel spray formation presents several challenges, especially in the near-field where the position and motion of internal fluid structures are obscured by dense clouds of fuel droplets.

    The form and content of this near-nozzle region is a point of contention in current research. At present, it is not clear exactly when and under what conditions an intact liquid core exists at the nozzle exit in the atomization regime.

    My research will be focused on the investigation of such aspects by means of advanced laser diagnostics techniques and enhanced image processing algorithms.

    Due to demanding legislation on exhaust emissions for internal combustion engines and increasing fuel prices, automotive manufacturers have focused their efforts on optimizing turbocharging systems. Turbocharger system control optimization is difficult: Unsteady flow conditions combined with not very accurate compressor maps make the real time turbocharger rotational speed one of the most important quantities in the optimization process. This work presents a methodology designed to obtain the turbocharger rotational speed via vibration analysis. Standard knock sensors have been employed in order to achieve a robust and accurate, yet still a low-cost solution capable of being mounted on-board. Results show that the developed method gives an estimation of the turbocharger rotational speed, with errors and accuracy acceptable for the proposed application. The method has been evaluated on a heavy duty diesel engine.

REXUS/BEXUS is a student programme realised under a bilateral agency agreement between the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the Swedish National Space Board (SNSB). The Swedish share of the payload has been made available to students from other European countries through a collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA). EuroLaunch, a cooperation between the Esrange Space Center and the Mobile Rocket Base (MORABA) of DLR, is responsible for the launch campaign management and operations of the launch vehicles.
