PLD Space secures its first GNC contract with European Space Agency - ESA to develop a new hybrid navigation system under the NAVISP / Element 2 Program, a key ESA initiative to enhance European competitiveness in Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies. The agreement will also enable us to fully own the development of high-precision navigation software for MIURA 5 and MIURA Next reusable launchers and future space vehicles. Capturing images of Earth from space is nothing new. But georeferencing them directly in orbit, in real-time, from live satellite telemetry, is a new frontier. With the support of Planetek Italia, D-Orbit has successfully demonstrated this capability, tagging and georeferencing images in orbit. In a recent test, we captured an image of Sydney, Australia, and used this breakthrough to enable an AI model to recognize key landmarks, including the International Convention Centre of Sydney, where the IAC 2025 Sydney is taking place. This achievement has also been enabled by AIX, a project by Planetek in collaboration with D-Orbit and AIKO - Infinite ways to autonomy, co-funded by European Space Agency - ESA InCubed, an Earth Observation programme managed by ESA Φ-lab. AIX leverages Artificial Intelligence and blockchain in space to enhance satellite capabilities in reactivity, responsiveness, and low-latency data delivery. This breakthrough opens up new opportunities for our Space Cloud Services customers, who can now run algorithms on data generated in orbit in near-real time to deliver actionable intelligence across multiple domains, from ship detection and disaster monitoring to land transformation and asset management. #wearedorbit #spacecloud #cloud #data #ai #satellites

SORA 2.5 became applicable in EU! The long-waited EASA Decision introducing SORA 2.5 (specific operation risk assessment for drone operations) in the EU framework has been published. https://lnkd.in/eXApzysm SORA 2.5 will simplify the authorisation process for UAS operations in the specific category by: -         clarifying its text making it easier for UAS operators to meet the expectations of competent authorities; -         reducing the room for interpretations e enabling more harmonised implementation across Member States; -         Lowering the amount of evidence required for obtaining an authorisation for most Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations classified as low risk (SAIL II). -         Relaxing certain requirements, in particular those related to the containment of drones within the operational volume. The SORA 2.5 framework is immediately applicable. However, SORA 2.0 has not been withdrawn. If you are in the final phase of the application process and have already used SORA 2.0, you are not required to reorganise your documentation or reapply. From a safety perspective, a UAS operation assessed under SORA 2.0 or SORA 2.5 is considered equivalent. SORA 2.5 introduces a number of alleviations and simplifications that may be beneficial for UAS operators. Compared with the JARUS SORA 2.5 version, only minor changes have been introduced. The most significant update provides clearer guidance on the division of responsibilities—specifically, the evidence to be provided by the UAS designer and those by the UAS operator. For a complete description of these changes, please refer to the explanatory note accompanying the SORA 2.5 release. Use of Population Density Maps SORA 2.5 requires the use of population density maps. To support this requirement, EASA, in cooperation with the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the Copernicus, developed dedicated population density maps. This is an excellent example of using data funded by different EU projects.
