Protecting our Caribbean Sea and Sustaining our Future.
About us
MISSION 'Protecting our Caribbean Sea and Sustaining our Future' Promoting regional co-operation for the protection and sustainable development of the marine environment of the Wider Caribbean Region. DESCRIPTION The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) established the Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP) in 1981 as one of its administered Regional Seas Programmes. This was in recognition of the importance and value of the Wider Caribbean Region’s fragile and vulnerable coastal and marine ecosystems including endemic plants and animals. The CEP brings together the 38 Member States and Territories of the Wider Caribbean Region by promoting regional co-operation for the protection and sustainable development of their coastal and marine environmental resources. The CEP also formed the basis for the development and adoption of the Cartagena Convention as the first and only regionally binding treaty of its kind in 1986. This legal agreement is supported by three technical Protocols on Oil Spills, Marine Biodiversity (Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife – SPAW) and Pollution (Land Based Sources of Marine Pollution – LBS). The three working Sub-Programmes of the CEP focus on Pollution, Marine Marine Biodiversity and Communications. E-mail contact: [email protected]

This week (Nov 4–6) in Bangkok, Thailand, our Coordinator Christopher Corbin is representing the UNEP Cartagena Convention Secretariat and Caribbean Environment Programme at the Regional Seas Indicators Working Group Workshop. 🌊 Hosted under the Regional Seas Programme, the meeting brings together all 18 Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans and global partners to revise and update the Regional Seas Indicators — a shared framework that tracks ecosystem health, pollution, biodiversity, and socio-economic progress across the world’s oceans and coasts. Through this process, we aim to: • Consolidate and update the list of Regional Seas Indicators • Agree on regional monitoring and reporting responsibilities • Ensure alignment with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, SDGs, and other global commitments • Strengthen resource mobilization and capacity-building plans The revised indicators and prioritization plan will be presented to UNEA-7, advancing efforts to protect and sustainably manage marine and coastal environments globally — and in the Wider Caribbean region. 🌏 #RegionalSeas #UNEP #CaribbeanEnvironment #OceanAction #MarineConservation #SustainableDevelopment #UNEA7

The Regional Seas Programme (RSP) is convening an Indicators Working Group workshop to revise and update the set of Regional Seas Indicators, which track the state of marine and coastal environments across the Regional Seas Programme. The indicators provide a common framework for monitoring ecosystem health, pollution levels, biodiversity, and socio-economic dimensions, enabling Regional Seas member countries to measure progress and compare results at the national, regional and global scales. The workshop will bring together the 18 Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans (Regional Seas) and representatives of relevant global frameworks. The updated indicator set and a prioritization plan are expected to be presented to the Seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7). Expected outcomes 1. A consolidated and updated list of Regional Seas indicators. 2. Consensus on which Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans will monitor and report on specific indicators, based on current adoption and regional relevance. 3. Clear alignment of the indicators with the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, Sustainable Development relevant goals, and other Multilateral Environmental Agreements, ensuring political relevance and global visibility. 4. Agreement on linking prioritized indicator tiers and resource needs clarifying how financing and capacity-building support can be mobilized and distributed among Regional Seas Conventions and Action Plans. In preparation for the Workshop, two online technical sessions took place. The technical sessions included the discussion of the proposed procedure for assessing the current Regional Seas indicators adopted in 2016 and agreeing on a revised set of indicators to be adopted by all Regional Seas. The online technical sessions took place on 7th & 16th October 2025 https://lnkd.in/dezN54cw

One of the sessions I enjoyed the most at GCFI 78, in Cartagena de Indias, was the “Third meeting of MPA Networks of the Wider Caribbean Region”. Thanks Susana Perera Valderrama for organizing it and connecting the work in your region with the Global Network of MPA Manager Networks and the Blue Nature Alliance System work for Capacity Building. As part of our 20th anniversary, we hosted a special workshop on oil spill preparedness. We focussed on strengthening collaboration and knowledge in Suriname. Protecting our coasts, rivers and communities through planning, coordination and effective communication. Participants engaged in scenario planning and crisis communication exercises, exploring real-world response strategies and stakeholder collaboration. In the afternoon, artist Sri Irodikromo led an art-activation, transforming the theme into an art activation that symbolized collective responsibility and portrayed Suriname’s biodiversity. We thank all partners and participants for their active contributions and shared commitment to protect and make responsible use of Suriname’s natural resources.
