It now plays a central part in supporting liquidity and trading activity across public markets. 🔑 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: 1️⃣ Definition and Market Role At its core, securities lending is a loan of securities — typically from long-term institutional holders to broker-dealers — in exchange for collateral and a fee. It supports a range of trading strategies including short selling and arbitrage. 2️⃣ Growth Drivers Market efficiency demands, increased derivatives activity, and yield-focused strategies have all contributed to greater interest from both borrowers and lenders. Regulatory reforms have also opened access in more jurisdictions. 3️⃣ Borrower Profiles The main borrowers include broker-dealers and hedge funds. Their lending needs arise from activities such as managing proprietary positions, financing inventory, and executing synthetic trades. 4️⃣ Revenue Potential Stock loan fees and reinvested collateral returns can boost portfolio performance. Key variables include loan size, security type, duration, and collateral flexibility. 5️⃣ Legal and Operational Infrastructure To support scale and reduce risk, participants rely on standard agreements — such as the GMSLA — and established procedures for settlement, margin calls, and default handling. 📌 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗜𝘁 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 Securities lending improves capital efficiency and supports trade execution.
