The APEC - Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Secretariat's Policy Support Unit just released the August 2025 edition of the APEC Regional Trends Analysis (https://lnkd.in/g_Y-KcRD) co-authored by my colleagues Rhea Crisologo Hernando and Glacer Niño A. Vasquez. The global economy continues to face uncertainty. Trade recovery during Q1 2025 was not a sustained rebound in demand. It may fade soon as it was mostly explained by risk-mitigation strategies anticipating trade-restrictive measures. Economic growth is moderating, as geopolitical issues are affecting the economy. While there is enthusiasm towards the adoption of new technologies such as AI, which can improve productivity, uneven digital capacity in the APEC region and the cost of new technologies may constraint their adoption. Some good news is that greenfield investments keep increasing in the APEC region. A significant amount of greenfield investments are being placed on strategic, productivity-enhancing sectors, for example, energy and gas supply, information and communication, electronics and electrical equipment, which could support efforts for a structural economic transformation. The APEC region is facing a dual challenge of preserving economic stability and advancing structural transformation. Besides strengthening confidence and keeping adaptative macroeconomic policies, structural reforms to accelerate labor reforms and scale up digital skills development are important.
