Our Monthly Healing Walk Recap ! What a powerful moment it was! Men stood tall, women raised their voices, and together, we created a safe space for healing and understanding. The ladies reminded us that supporting men’s mental health is a collective responsibility because when he heals, the family heals too. We remain grateful to all who joined this movement of mental health support with passion, love, courage, and to create awareness. #AManMustCry

A Mental Health Movement for Men’s Emotional Well-being and Mental Health Support in Africa
About us
A MAN MUST CRY is a community-based mental health movement born out of lived experience. Founded in 2025 by James Nyabera a passionate mental health advocate to promote men’s emotional well-being and mental health in Africa. We are mental health survivors and storytellers who exist to challenge the harmful cultural norms that equate masculinity with emotional silence, instead creating safe spaces where men and boys can openly express vulnerability without stigma. While our primary focus is on men’s mental health, we work with women, youth, and allies to build a supportive, inclusive environment for emotional healing, prevention of suicide, and stronger thriving community. WHY WE EXIST Our fathers, partners, brothers, and friends are facing a health crisis—yet it’s rarely talked about. Men are dying too young, and we can’t afford to stay silent. In Kenya and across Africa, men’s mental health is a silent emergency: Suicide rates among Kenyan men are three times higher than women (WHO, 2023). Nearly 1 in 4 men struggle with depression or anxiety, yet fewer than 20% seek help due to stigma and lack of safe spaces. Cultural norms teach boys to “be strong” by suppressing emotions, leaving many men battling untreated trauma, strained relationships, substance abuse, and increased suicide risk. WHY IT MATTERS NOW Post-COVID realities, economic hardship, unemployment, and rising social pressures have only deepened this crisis. If left unaddressed: Families will continue to suffer from unresolved trauma and domestic strain. Workplaces will lose productivity due to burnout and untreated illness. Communities will face higher rates of substance abuse, crime, and suicide. OUR RESPONSE We exist to break this cycle by: Encouraging open and stigma-free dialogue about men’s mental health. Providing practical support, counselling, and peer-led support networks. Using storytelling, education, and advocacy to challenge harmful norms and promote healthier, supportive practices.

We are honored to have our Founder,James Nyabera, appear on The Reflective Gap Podcast (UK) James recently had the incredible opportunity to share his journey on The Reflective Gap Podcast, hosted by the inspiring Jen G. — a platform dedicated to healing through experience. At Reflective Gap, healing begins when we truly understand, connect, and listen to one another’s stories. Through lived experience workshops and authentic conversations, the podcast highlights resilience, vulnerability, and the power of human connection. This experience reminded James that storytelling is one of the most powerful forms of healing — not just for those who speak, but also for those who listen. We continue to champion the creation of safe spaces where hearts can rest, voices can be heard, and healing can happen. #MentalHealthAwareness #HealingThroughExperience #ReflectiveGap #AManMustCry #EmotionalWellbeing #MenMentalHealth

TURNING AWARENESS INTO ACTION At A MAN MUST CRY Mental Health Movement, we are witnessing something powerful - boys and men who once stayed silent about their mental health are now reaching out, opening up, and choosing healing. It’s more than awareness; it’s transformation. It’s conversations turning into courage. It’s vulnerability turning into strength. This October, as we continue to champion mental well-being, we invite you to join our Monthly Healing Walk — a space to breathe, connect, and heal together. Come walk with us — for yourself, for a friend, for that young man growing up with locked-up heart, and for every man still learning that vulnerability is strength. Together, we are turning awareness into action. #AManMustCry #MentalHealthAwareness #TurningAwarenessIntoAction #HealingWalk #MensMentalHealth

At A MAN MUST CRY Mental Health Movement, we believe that building trust with people is easier than building trust with systems. That’s why we place individuals with lived experience at the center of our advocacy. They are not just participants they are leaders, educators, and changemakers who use their voices and stories to break stigma, create awareness, and inspire healing through peer-led initiatives. This approach reminds us that mental health transformation is not only about policies and structures -it is about real people, real conversations, and real lived experiences that move hearts and shift mindsets. As we continue to grow with new chapters forming across counties and upcoming opportunities to share our milestone progress on national media platforms we remain grounded in one truth: people first, systems next. Together, let’s keep creating safe spaces where men and communities can heal, express, and thrive. #MentalHealthAwareness #YouthLeadership #PeerSupport #AManMustCry #LivedExperience #MenAndMentalHealth

DON’T MOCK A MAN WHO CRIES AND SEEKS THERAPY That man is not weak. He is human. He has feelings. He has scars you may not see. He carries weights you may never know. For too long, society has told men to "man up," to suppress pain, to hide emotions, to suffer in silence. But healing begins the moment we allow ourselves to be vulnerable. Crying is not a sign of weakness, it’s a sign of strength. Seeking therapy is not failure it’s courage in action. Every tear shed is a step towards healing. Every therapy session attended is an investment in a healthier future. Mocking a man for this only reinforces the very stigma that keeps too many from seeking help. Let’s normalize men expressing their emotions. Let’s celebrate courage in seeking therapy and let’s build a society where healing is honored, not ridiculed. Because at the end of the day, men are human beings with hearts that feel, souls that hurt, and lives that matter. #MentalHealthAwareness #AManMustCry #EndTheStigma #MenAndMentalHealth

Message inspired by our Founder and Lead advocate James Nyabera Mental health conversation is something we cannot postpone. Every time we speak up, we chip away at stigma. Every safe space we create, we give someone courage. Every act of compassion, no matter how small, reminds someone they are not alone. At A MAN MUST CRY Mental Health Movement, we believe it’s time we normalize mental health conversations , at home, in schools, in workplaces, and in our communities. Postponing them is no longer an option. Let’s build a culture of listening, understanding, and healing. #AManMustCry #MentalHealthMatters #CommunityHealing #MensMentalHealth

Crying often makes others pause, notice, or show concern because it’s a visible expression of vulnerability.
