Congratulations to DEEP ISOLATION for the successful completion of Project PUCK. This is a groundbreaking initiative to demonstrate the feasibility and potential commercial readiness of the company’s Universal Canister System (UCS) to manage TRi-structural ISOtropic (TRISO) spent nuclear fuel. Deep Isolation worked with advanced reactor company Kairos Power to conceptually evaluate the use of TRISO pebble fuel, affirming the UCS as a safe, scalable solution of deep borehole disposal for next-generation reactors. ARPA-E’s supported Deep Isolation’s Universal Performance Criteria and Canister for Advanced Reactor Waste Form Acceptance in Borehole and Mined Repositories Considering Design Safety (#UPWARDS) project, through which the company developed its universal canister design. We spoke with Deep Isolation Executive Vice President of Engineering Jesse Sloane, P.E. about their collaboration with ARPA-E. Jesse told us: “Our project aims to solve one of the toughest challenges in nuclear energy: what to do with the waste. We've developed a Universal Canister System that standardizes how nuclear waste is stored, transported, and permanently disposed of deep underground. “Working on Project UPWARDS has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. Prior to joining Deep Isolation, I spent years as a consultant analyzing large-scale engineering projects that had failed — projects that suffered from unclear requirements, shifting priorities, poor communication, or uncontrolled risk.
