NYK Presents Company's History and Business to Tsinghua University Students In July, NYK supported Tsinghua University in China with its overseas social practice program by providing 10 visiting students with presentations on our business activities and the history of Japanese shipping. Additionally, we facilitated visits to the NYK Tokyo Container Terminal and the historic Hikawa Maru. Tsinghua University encourages its students to participate in overseas social practice programs to develop their global competencies and foster connections. During the summer of 2025, the university is sending over 800 students and faculty abroad for activities centered on the theme “Youth Action in Global Development.” As part of this program, a group of 10 students studying shipping and ports visited Japan for an eight-day program, with NYK selected as one of their key destinations. NYK remains committed to contributing to society through collaborations with external partners in the fields of education and culture. Ministers from APEC’s 21 member economies just concluded the inaugural APEC Digital and AI Ministerial Meeting in Incheon, issuing a joint statement that charts a path toward responsible digital transformation and trusted artificial intelligence (AI) development in support of the region’s prosperity and sustainable growth. The meeting also recognized Korea’s leadership in developing a new APEC AI initiative, expected by the end of 2025. What can the world learn from China’s extraordinary and contradictory manufacturing rise? 🇨🇳 In this week’s Friday Buns, Yongjiang Shi (Centre for International Manufacturing) led a fascinating session on the reactivation of the China Industry Studies Group (CISG), a research platform first formed in 2011 to better understand the evolution of Chinese manufacturing. Drawing on decades of study tours, case studies, and collaborations, the session explored: 🔹 How China went from a low-cost assembler to the world’s largest and most complex manufacturing system. 🔹 The tensions between rapid industrial success and the environmental, social, and geopolitical challenges that followed. 🔹 Why traditional management theories may struggle to explain China’s unique model, and what this means for future research. 🔹 Lessons from fieldwork with ISMM/MET students and PhDs, including the role of local entrepreneurship, policy experimentation, and global value chain positioning. With renewed momentum, CISG now aims to serve as a transdisciplinary hub at IfM for researching the complexities and global impacts of China’s manufacturing evolution. 📅 More insights to come at the upcoming CISG Forum on Wednesday 23 July.
