XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel again demonstrates the artistic and sustainability credentials of steel. Following on from ArcelorMittal’s use last year of XCarb® steel for the 2000 Olympic torches at Paris 2024, the company has worked with Swiss furniture manufacturer Vitra to realise the Doshi Retreat, the only work outside of India by the late Pritzker Laureate architect Balkrishna Doshi. Driven by Vitra’s carbon neutrality ambitions, the steel that we have provided for the Doshi retreat is our XCarb® recycled and renewably produced steel. The heavy plates used were made in Gijon in northern Spain and the beams in Belval in Luxembourg, both entirely from scrap steel in the Electric Arc Furnace and using only renewable energy such as wind and solar power in the manufacturing process. This means that the CO2 footprint of the steel can be as low as 300kg per tonne of finished steel as opposed to an average of around 1.85 to 1.99 tonnes per tonne of steel when the traditional blast furnace method is used.
