Nature-based Solutions (NbS) offer significant environmental and social benefits in addition to real economic value. The EU estimates that every euro invested in nature restoration can generate up to 38 euros in returns, from flood protection to cleaner air. ▶️ Development-critical sectors face declining investment While greenfield investment values held steady, international project finance – often crucial for infrastructure – fell by 26% in 2024. The drop was especially steep in sectors critical to achieving the #GlobalGoals: renewable energy (-31%), transport (-32%) and water and sanitation (-30%). UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warns that current levels of investment fall far short of global needs. Closing the financing gap for sustainable development alone would require an estimated $4 trillion per year in developing countries – a target that is becoming more distant. 🎉 DEG’s portfolio companies employed almost three million people in 2024. Around 1.9 million of these are employed by over 1,300 local enterprises that DEG invests in via funds. 👩‍🏭 80% of DEG’s direct customers already provide #DecentJobs today. That implies that workers are formally employed and employers comply with the core labour standards of the International Labour Organization and to implement good HR as well as health and safety management systems. 💪 26% of direct customers go above and beyond international labour standards to offer particularly favourable conditions in terms of remuneration, innovative working time arrangements or internationally recognised certifications. 💡 DEG offers its customers advisory and support services in areas including development of labour standards, training programmes and improving HR management, financed with resources from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ)) and DEG’s own funds.   👭 Approximately 860,000 women were employed by DEG’s existing customers in 2024. 46% of direct DEG portfolio customers have demonstrated that they are laying the groundwork for non-discriminatory workplaces and employ more women or have more female managers than the industry average. 26% go substantially further – for example through targeted equality measures – in terms of both management structures and policies affecting all employees. ⬆️ Alongside their effect on direct employment, the companies supported by DEG have an additional impact on indirect employment in their region. Their expansion benefits suppliers and service providers, which also create new jobs. In the case of the financial institutions promoted by DEG, the employment generated in their portfolio is particularly relevant.
