🌍 With less than two months to go before COP30 in Belém and as Climate Week NYC opens its doors (21–28 September): how do we deliver on this “COP of implementation”? 📄 IDDRI releases a new Policy Brief that unpacks the multiple dimensions of implementing the international climate framework under the UNFCCC—and offers practical suggestions to the COP30 Presidency. Its proposals focus on three key areas: ✅ Making full use of existing UNFCCC mechanisms ✅ Orchestrating climate action across international fora beyond the UNFCCC ✅ Harnessing positive action on the ground 👉 COP30 can mark the beginning of a post-negotiation era, where transparency frameworks, synthesis reports and cooperation platforms are not just compliance tools, but powerful levers to overcome barriers, build solutions and mobilize actors. 👉It should launch a sustained and coordinated implementation drive that extends beyond a single COP cycle—promoting sector-specific collaboration, fostering regional peer learning, and empowering grassroots participation to ensure legitimacy and reduce polarization. Climate transition plans are key to showing investors, suppliers and customers that an organization is committed to achieving a 1.5-degree pathway transition, and that its business model will remain relevant in a net-zero economy. Organizations that continually disclose through CDP year-on-year are more likely to provide sufficient details on their climate transition plan. Columbia Climate School launches Climate Finance Vulnerability Index - a new tool that identifies 65 ‘Red Zone’ nations across four separate climate scenarios. 43 nations in Sub-Saharan Africa, eight in Latin America and the Caribbean, six in Asia-Pacific, six in the Middle East, and two in Europe are most at-risk. Climate adaptation finance is essential for building economic resilience to climate change, and accelerating this investment is more critical than ever. In a new report prepared for the G20 South African Presidency, in collaboration with African Development Bank Group, the OECD identifies solutions to address the interconnected barriers that hinder adaptation investment, from macroeconomic and capacity challenges to obstacles specific to public and private finance, and limited access to international concessional funding. The report focuses specifically on solutions to help address Africa's acute vulnerability to climate risks – from geopolitical factors to labour pressures, rising climate exposure to a growing population. Africa currently receives just 3% of total global climate finance. This urgent need to build resilience, in Africa and beyond, requires a concerted effort to scale up and better align financial flows from all sources in support of climate-resilient development pathways.
