SC refuses to interfere with Telangana HC order staying OBC quota hike in local bodies

    Synopsis

The Supreme Court has opted to uphold the Telangana High Court's recent ruling, effectively putting a pause on the initiative to amplify Other Backward Classes reservation in municipalities and panchayats. By rejecting the proposed hike to 67%, the ruling paves the way for local elections to move forward unimpeded by these changes.

    ET Bureau
The Supreme Court on Thursday rejected a plea, challenging a Telangana High Court order that stayed the state government's decision to raise Other Backward Classes reservation in municipalities and panchayats to 42%.

A bench headed by justice Vikram Nath refused to interfere with the high court's interim order, observing that the local elections can continue without any proposed hike in OBC reservations.

The state's move, made ahead of elections to such local bodies, effectively took total reservations to 67%. On October 9, the high court stayed the said reservation hike.

The case pertains to three orders passed by the Telangana government in September this year.
