Make School’s Summer Academy focuses on teaching iOS development with the Swift programming language because of the doors it will open in students’ lives and careers. Here are a few reasons that make us excited about Swift:

1. Swift is the premiere language for building iOS apps, and it’s here to stay!

Apple released Swift in October of 2014. Since then, it’s become one of the most popular programming languages in the world. Swift is ranked 12th on the TIOBE Index, and has already supplanted Apple’s original development language, Objective-C!

2. Swift developers are in demand.

1,500,000+ jobs have been created around app design and development since the launch of the App Store in 2008.

3. A career as an iOS Developer pays well.

According to Glassdoor, the national average starting salary for an iOS Developer is $85,000/year!

4. Swift is easy to learn.

Apple designed it with education in mind. Apple is known for beautiful design, and the Swift language is no exception. Apple’s Engineers designed Swift to be powerful enough for professional developers, while still being easy to pick up!

5. Swift is open source and you can contribute!

Swift.org has a robust, friendly, Open-Source community that loves to answer questions and work together to make Swift awesome! You can even contribute — they’d love your help!

6. Learning Swift can open incredible doors for you, like meeting Tim Cook!

Kenny Batista attended the NYC Summer Academy in 2016 where he learned Swift. Kenny built Mubimoji, an animated sticker keyboard. His instructors saw his drive and Kenny enjoyed his experience so much that we invited him to enroll in the Product College that started just a few weeks later. Fast forward 9 months and Kenny was invited as one of 60 scholars to attend Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC)!

7. Xcode!

Apple’s Integrated Development Environment (IDE) for Swift/iOS Development is world class! It’s easy to use, friendly to new developers, and stable!

8. Server-side Swift is a thing!

IBM has been working hard to make it easy to write servers in Swift with their new framework, Kitura. With major companies such as IBM investing in Swift, you can be sure that it’s here to stay!

You’re ready to learn (or master) Swift! Now what?

Make School’s expertise in iOS development goes back to the days when our founders were coding and launching their own apps while still in High School. Nearly a decade later, Make School’s Summer Academy is in it’s 6th year with hundreds of apps launched by alumni, the Product College is pioneering a debt free model of education and the Online Academy continues to offer free resources for learning iOS development.
