Compliance won’t save the future. Stewardship will. Yesterday’s Board Sustainability Training reminded us of that truth. We went deep into three themes: 1️⃣ Establishing Islah through Islamic Finance: The Toyyib Concept in Action Tan Sri Azman Mokhtar reminded us that sustainability in Islamic finance goes beyond compliance — it is about responsibility, fairness, and balance for the greater good. 2️⃣ Navigating the IFRS S1 & S2 Sustainability Disclosure Standards Dr Adam Ng emphasized how global standards are reshaping accountability, transparency, and the integration of climate and ESG risks into financial decision-making. 3️⃣ The Circular Economy: Rethinking Growth and Resource Use En. Abdul Razak Aya illustrated how waste can be turned into wealth, from biodegradable rice straw packaging to palm oil by-products — bringing to life the potential of circular value chains in Malaysia. 💡 My key takeaway: Sustainability is not an “add-on” to governance — it is the core agenda. PSA to fresh grads: don’t internalise external factors as your own internal failings. I know it feels overwhelming when your parents expect you to start working right after graduation, especially if your older siblings secured jobs even before their convocations. But know this - the job market is NOT the same as it was just a few years ago. A high CGPA no longer guarantees a job. ↳ The economy has shifted. Inflation is high, budgets are tighter and more companies are cautious in hiring. ↳ Industries are restructuring: automation, AI and digitalisation mean fewer admin or entry-level roles, with companies expecting graduates to come in with skills that used to be learned on the job. ↳ And work itself is changing. Permanent jobs are no longer the default as most roles are now contract roles or even project-based. This is why the govt in recent years has been promoting TVET and entrepreneurship - they recognise that traditional graduate jobs are shrinking. So know this - it’s NOT your fault that you're having a harder time getting hired in this economy! But it IS your life, so take every chance to learn, build skills, and get ready to impress future employers or build the confidence to start something of your own. Some people treat their career like Touch ‘n Go — just tap, move and repeat. 🚗 Then they wonder why nothing is really happening with their career. Tak dapat naik pangkat pun. Recently I had the chance to do a talk for the Touch ‘n Go Group, and it was on the topic that many of us don't focus on much, our career identity. Your career identity is not just about your job title or what’s on your name card. It’s about what people say about you when you are not around, when you are not in the meeting room. So how you present yourself at work and also online do matter because…. people are always watching you! The good news is you are in control of your career identity. You are fully in control of how you show up and behave at work and what you post online. It was a very fun and engaging session. There were many questions from the group and these 3 were probably the best ones 💬 “How to set a boundary between personal and professional identity?” 💬 “How to start on LinkedIn?” 💬 “How to be more visible at the workplace?” Quick answer to those questions. 🌻Try to blend your personal and professional identity. Easier to manage rather than 2 different identities 🌻Focus on giving value when you start writing on LinkedIn. Less syok sendiri posts. 🌻To be more visible - speak up, ask questions in meeting and turn up to events Thank you so much to the Touch 'n Go Group. I was a bit worried because it was an online session on a friday afternoon but you were all very curious and engaging, and made it a very fun session.
