  • TACKLING THE CTS NEXUS: IPAS PILOTS HOLISTIC APPROACH IN MANDIMBA DISTRICT TO EMPOWER GIRLS   Child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and school dropout (CTS) are deeply interconnected challenges that continue to affect the lives of millions of girls globally. These issues reinforce one another, creating barriers that prevent girls from achieving their full potential. To address these complex challenges, Ipas Mozambique has introduced the CTS Nexus approach — a holistic framework that examines the connections between these phenomena that are often addressed in isolation.      📊 The situation in Mozambique remains alarming:   ⛔ 46% of girls marry before 18   ⛔40% become pregnant before 18   ⛔Only 50% complete primary school, 20% secondary, and 2% reach higher education     This calls for urgent, coordinated action‼️   With funding from the Embassy of Sweden in Mozambique and Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada, Ipas Moçambique has launched a pilot of the CTS Nexus approach in Mandimba District, Niassa, with strong support from the district government and collaboration with civil society, local communities, and government institutions to work together in prevention and response.   On October 16–17, Ipas and the CBO Clean My Village facilitated Mozambique’s first-ever CTS Nexus Community Dialogue in Mandimba. The event brought together 70 participants — including community leaders, teachers, police, health professionals, youth representatives, and government officials — to discuss how to work collectively to protect the health, rights, and futures of girls.     "This gives us a platform to reflect in depth on the problems that we have come to discussing and these are serious problems in our district of Mandimba When we speak about early pregnancies, when we speak about child marriage, we're talking about the dignity of our lives. We're talking about life, about basic human rights" stated His Excellency Emídio Benjamim Xavier, Administrator of Mandimba District, in his opening speech.   The outcomes of this dialogue will inform a district-level response plan to ensure that the CTS Nexus approach is locally driven, inclusive, and sustainable. Ipas hope is that this pilot will serve as a model to scale up across Mozambique, transforming the lives of countless girls nationwide.     #GenderEquality #SRHR #GirlsEmpowerment #ChildMarriage #SchoolDropout #TeenagePregnancy #CTSNexus Ipas

  • SWEDISH AMBASSADOR VISITS IPAS MOZAMBIQUE INTERVENTIONS IN NIASSA PROVINCE As part of the project “Creating a lasting momentum for gender equality and human rights in Mozambique through improved access to and respect for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including safe abortion”, funded by the Embassy of Sweden, Ipas Mozambique welcomed the first visit of the new Swedish Ambassador to Mozambique, Andres jato. The Ambassador visited project interventions in Niassa Province, accompanied by the Deputy Head of Cooperation, Luisa Fumo. With the aim of gaining a closer understanding of the project’s activities across its different components — health system and community engagement — the visit took place in Ngauma District, including the Massangulo Health Center. During the mission, the delegation from the Embassy and Ipas paid a courtesy visit to the local authorities of Ngauma District, including the representative of the District Administrator, the District Commander of the Mozambique Republic Police (PRM), the District Services of Education, Youth and Technology (SDEJT), and the District Services of Health, Women and Social Action (SDSMAS). The delegation also interacted with activists from FOFEN, a community-based organization trained by Ipas Mozambique, who demonstrated the connection between the community and the health facility during a community talk on sexual and reproductive health and rights held at the Massangulo Health Center. The discussion included conversations about different norms and stigmas surrounding abortion, and the Embassy team was able to witness firsthand the importance of working to challenge these norms with girls, women, boys, and men to create positive change — seeing the direct impact of the project’s actions on the lives of women and girls. The program also included interactions with health providers trained by Ipas, aimed at observing the quality and availability of services for comprehensive abortion care (CAC), family planning (FP), and gender-based violence (GBV) response. #AmbassadorVisit #Niassa #ipasmozambique #SwedenInMz Embassy of Sweden in Mozambique

  • IPAS MOZAMBIQUE PARTICIPATES IN THE FIGO WORLD CONGRESS OF GYNECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS From October 5 to 9, Ipas Mozambique actively participated in the FIGO (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics) World Congress of Gynecology and Obstetrics, held in Cape Town, South Africa. The event provided a strategic opportunity to share experiences on access to sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services in humanitarian contexts and to highlight the role of obstetricians-gynecologists in improving healthcare. The congress brought together specialists, researchers, obstetricians-gynecologists, and health professionals from around the world. From Ipas Mozambique, Alice Mukamana Nangura, National Program Manager, and Nádia Macaringue, Senior Health Systems Advisor and Project Lead of the SIDA-funded project, participated. From the Ministry of Health, Dr. Vânia Benzane, responsible for the Maternal Health Program and Focal Point for the Abortion Program, attended. From the Mozambican Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AMOG), the gynecologists Dr. Equibal Abílio, Dr. Joana Churana, and Dr. Emília Sueia participated. The participants engaged with international and local partners, including other Ipas offices such as Ipas DRC, Ipas Pakistan, and Ipas Southern Africa. During the congress, several sessions were held discussing topics such as safe and self-managed abortion; second-trimester abortion management; emergency obstetric care; sexual and reproductive rights; and technological innovations in reproductive health. On October 4, a strategic dinner organized by the FIGO committee took place, where Ipas Mozambique presented its key actions, progress, and opportunities for FIGO support. Ipas Mozambique’s presence at the congress not only strengthened the team’s technical knowledge but also allowed them to bring back lessons and innovative solutions that can be adapted to local realities, contributing to the continuous improvement of sexual and reproductive health services in the country. Ipas Mozambique participated in this congress thanks to the support of the Embassy of Sweden. #FIGO2025 #SexualHealth #ReproductiveHealth #MISAU #AMOG #IpasMozambique #SwedeninMz  Embassy of Sweden in Mozambique

  • 🌍 REDE DSR CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL SAFE ABORTION DAY AND LAUNCHES NEW PROJECT IN MAPUTO As part of the International Safe Abortion Day (September 28) celebrations, the Sexual and Reproductive Rights Network (Rede DSR) — of which Ipas Mozambique is a member — organized a Health Fair at the Ndlhavela Circle in Maputo Province. The event offered family planning services, safe abortion counseling, birth registration, issuance of ID cards, passports, and NUIT, along with cultural performances and interactive quizzes for adolescents and young people. It brought together a wide range of institutions and partners, including District and Provincial Health Services, the Provincial Directorate of Migration, Notary Services, the Civil Identification Service, youth movements such as AfriYAN, YAM, and the Coalition, civil society organizations that are members of the Network, and media outlets. The fair also marked the official launch of the project “Promoting Access to Sexual and Reproductive Rights, including Safe Abortion Services”, officiated by Gilion Michila, District Administrator of Matola — a significant milestone in advancing the health and dignity of women and girls in Mozambique.
