1 Triton Square, in the heart of London’s Knowledge Quarter, has been reimagined into a flagship science and technology hub for British Land, in partnership with Royal London Asset Management. Our marginal gains approach retained the superstructure, reused over 25,000 façade parts, and applied circular economy principles throughout. Led by our design team, 1 Triton Square demonstrates how a “retain and reuse” philosophy can deliver exceptional sustainability. By refurbishing rather than rebuilding, our team saved 40,000 tonnes of carbon, delivered the project 30% faster, and achieved a BREEAM Outstanding rating. Our strategy has created a renewed, sustainable landmark for the science and technology community - a bold step towards a net zero future, and a healthy, connected workplace for 3,500 people. Globally, renewable energy capacity must triple by 2030 to stay on track for net zero. This #WorldEnergyDay, we’re reflecting on progress and the work still ahead. In the UK, renewables delivered 54.5% of electricity generation in Q2 2025, driven by offshore wind and solar. Low-carbon sources now make up nearly 70% of the mix, showing how far we’ve come - but there’s more to do. We’re partnering with governments, investors, developers, communities, and supply chains to accelerate the energy transition. Through innovation and collaboration, we’re delivering resilient, sustainable energy systems for the future. The energy transition isn’t just a challenge, it’s an opportunity to rethink how the world powers itself and to create a cleaner, fairer future for all. Isn’t assessing individual assets in retrofit too time consuming? “Not with the skills and technologies available today. Retrofitting can save time, cost and materials” says Rick Lee Associate and Retrofit Leader. With reuse and circular economy becoming the norm, there has been no better time to decide to retrofit. Retrofit is no longer a niche strategy - it’s a necessity. Read more in the latest article from Director and Retrofit Leader, Mike Edwards discussing the initial steps to start your retrofit journey, here: https://lnkd.in/duFs3XtU #Retrofit #Decarbonisation #SustainableDesign #LowCarbonFuture #BuiltEnvironment #NetZero #Sustainability

By listening to diverse voices, we can design solutions that truly work for everyone.

Proud to support the Community of Women in Water 💧 It was such a pleasure to see so many colleagues and friends come together at Arup last week for the Community of Women in Water event, “Hearing Unheard Voices.” The discussions, led by Professor Mala Rao CBE, Alan Nicol, and Jenna Browning, and expertly moderated by Kathryn Pharr, were a powerful reminder that achieving success means embracing diversity and inclusion at every level. Jenna’s 3 Cs – Curiosity, Courage, and Course-correcting – perfectly captured that spirit. Staying open to learning, having the courage to speak and listen deeply, and being willing to adjust when needed are essential for progress and genuine inclusion. Beyond the inspiring conversations, the event also highlighted the strength of women empowering women, showing up as allies, companions, and advocates for one another. Yet true belonging takes everyone. When we all come together across experiences, perspectives, and identities, we build a sector where every voice feels heard and valued. The shared purpose and commitment to growth made it especially meaningful to celebrate the Community of Women in Water becoming a registered UK charity, strengthening their ability to drive equity and inclusion across the sector. I’m proud that Arup continues to champion inclusion and create spaces where all voices can be heard 👏 Martin Shouler, Audrey Theodose, Jenna Browning, Kathryn Pharr, Alan Nicol, Mala Rao CBE #Diversity #Inclusion #Sustainability #CommunityOfWomenInWater #WeAreArup

Last weekend, we celebrated the opening of Keel Crossing – Sunderland’s landmark bridge and a powerful symbol of the city’s regeneration. As lead designer, we worked alongside VolkerStevin, Knight Architects and Sunderland City Council to create a structure that strengthens connectivity, supports active travel, and embeds sustainability into the city’s long-term masterplan. Our Newcastle team combined our multidisciplinary expertise to deliver a future-ready bridge that will benefit the community for generations to come. Keel Crossing at a glance - 250m long and 10m wide - 30m above the River Wear with a 125m central span - Links Sheepfolds with the city centre - A key piece of the Riverside Sunderland regeneration programme - Designed with reduced embodied carbon and built to meet the challenges of its riverside setting Congratulations to everyone involved in bringing Keel Crossing to life and helping shape Sunderland’s transformation. #KeelCrossing #UrbanRegeneration #ActiveTravel #Community #BridgeDesign #Sustainability #WeAreArup

Our latest collaboration with Lib Work introduces the groundbreaking Lib Earth House Model B—a full-scale residential prototype that marries 3D-printed soil walls with widely adopted timber frames. This innovative approach demonstrates how natural materials and digital fabrication can create environmentally conscious homes that meet modern living standards. Spanning approximately 100m², Model B showcases our hybrid construction method, merging advanced 3D printing technology with mainstream Japanese wooden housing techniques. The design features self-supporting soil walls reaching 3m in height, deep eaves, and a cluster-type layout that seamlessly connects living spaces with nature. By optimising soil-based materials and printing paths, we have achieved both structural integrity and aesthetic freedom. This milestone project opens new possibilities for sustainable architecture. By combining earth’s natural properties with digital innovation, we are creating homes that not only reduce environmental impact but also provide thermal comfort. The success of Model B proves that sustainable construction can be both practical and architecturally expressive, setting a new standard for eco-conscious residential design.
