By 2050, Africa's urban population will triple, adding over 900 million people to towns and cities. This is a transformation unlike anything the world has ever seen. But here’s the urgent question: Where will they live? 🔻 The reality: A housing crisis in motion Africa needs to build at least 4 million housing units per year to keep up with demand. Right now, it’s building only around 850,000 — just 21% of what’s needed. That’s a 3+ million unit shortfall each year. The result? Over 60% of Africa’s urban population lives in slums or informal settlements. These are communities built out of necessity — not design — often lacking clean water, sanitation, electricity, or secure tenure. Cities in Europe and North America aren’t building as fast — but they don’t have to. They’re already mostly urban, with established housing systems. But in Africa, urbanisation is outpacing infrastructure. This gap is feeding a vicious cycle: overcrowding, unsafe living, environmental risk, and social inequality. 🏗️ Affordable housing is not optional — it's the foundation of a resilient urban future. We need: - Massive investment in affordable, climate-resilient housing - Policies that enable community-led construction - Land use reform and inclusive urban planning - Partnerships that put housing at the centre of climate, health, and economic agendas 🛑 This is not just about bricks and mortar.
