Last week Tim Cook said Apple were planning to ‘significantly’ grow their AI investments. That's not too hard. While they might have redirected some CapEx to building and embedding AI, in terms of VC deals, Apple have not participated in any VC round of an AI-focussed startup to date. That compares to 257 rounds that Google (and its CVCs) have been involved in, gaining exposure to innovation at companies like Anthropic, Hugging Face, Lightmatter, Lambda, Synthesia, WRITER, AI21 Labs, CrowdStrike, Cohesity etc. Google, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Amazon and Meta have each been involved in 10s of billions of AI VC deals in the last three years alone. Some catching up to do. ft. TechCrunch article by Sarah Perez, + Dealroom data.
