Our Deputy Executive Director for Governance, Mr Jürgen Ebner, attended the European Police Congress 2025: Strengthening Europe's Internal Security yesterday and today. One of the key highlights of the congress was the panel on Asylum Policy and Internal Security, which explored the pressing question of whether Europe is sufficiently equipped to combat migrant smuggling and other serious forms of organised crime. “We are in a much better position than a few years ago – but still far from where we need to be,” Deputy Director Ebner observed. His remarks are in line with the findings of Europol's recently published SOCTA 2025 report, our flagship assessment of serious and organised crime in Europe. The report identifies priority crime areas for the coming years — including migrant smuggling — and highlights: The growing threat posed by serious and organised crime to state structures, the economy, and society: - Rising levels of violence and corruption across the EU; - The role of digitalisation in enabling criminal activities; - The rapid evolution of crime, driven by AI and emerging technologies. At the same time, the EU has significantly strengthened its internal security architecture over the past two decades. This includes: - Enhanced cooperation between national authorities; - A stronger, more operational role for EU agencies such as Europol and Frontex; - The establishment of the European Migrant Smuggling Centre (EMSC) by Europol in 2016 to focus specifically on tackling migrant smuggling. In 2024 alone, Europol supported over 3,300 cross-border investigations — 266 of which related to migrant smuggling, marking a 62% increase from the previous year. Mr Ebner concluded that, as Europe faces increasingly complex security challenges, robust coordination, modern tools, and empowered agencies like Europol will remain essential to protecting our shared values: security, trust, and justice. #EuropeanPoliceCongress #InternalSecurity #SOCTA2025
