Cybercrime is evolving and so is cyber defence. In a recent interview, ING’s CISO Debbie Janeczek shared insights on how financial institutions are adapting to today’s threat landscape. "Sometimes the criminal is careful, but their spouse or friends aren’t." That one overlooked alias was the clue that sparked Operation Serengeti 2.0: a massive cybercrime takedown spanning 18 countries. It sounds like the plot of a thriller, with hidden identities, international coordination, and a race against time, but this is real life. At the heart of the operation was Jethro, ING’s global anti-fraud officer, who volunteered his time to help lead the investigation through the Cybercrime Atlas initiative: a global volunteer team of 60 investigators. The result? ✅ 1,200 arrests ✅ Up to $100 million recovered ✅ 18 countries working together "The bust was a huge achievement for our team of volunteers," says Jethro.
