𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. 𝗪𝗲'𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲'𝘀 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗽. We've joined forces with fellow Dutch start-ups Carbyon, Paebbl, and Skytree to form the Dutch DAC/DOC Coalition. Our mission: to accelerate the adoption of Direct Air Capture (DAC) and Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technologies to deliver on Europe’s climate ambitions and close the loop of green CO₂. Last week, we presented our foundational policy paper in Brussels and aligned with a range of key European policymakers and leaders, including Han ten Broeke (Head of Cabinet for Commissioner for Climate, Net Zero and Clean Growth Wopke Hoekstra), Jeannette Baljeu (member of the European Parliament), Marthe Huigsloot, Henk Snoeken, Julia Chrispijn (members of the Permanent Representation of the Netherlands to the EU), and Daniel Mes, Nicolas Guez-Loussouarn from Ursula von der Leyen’s Task Force on Competitiveness. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝘆. DAC and DOC technologies offer a dual solution to help restore balance to the carbon cycle: by permanently removing legacy CO₂ from the atmosphere, and repurposing it as a valuable, circular resource for the industries that need it. Many thanks to Publyon EU for their support with making the Brussels mission a success. We look forward to continuing the conversation and helping Europe unlock a truly circular carbon economy. It’s been a milestone-filled quarter, from advancing our Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV), to driving innovation and strengthening global collaborations. We’ve progressed our R&D, shared our story on international stages, and joined forces with peers worldwide - each step bringing us closer to responsibly scaling marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). Two exciting updates to share: 🔹We’re kicking off a Dutch research collaboration under TKI Deltatechnologie with Wageningen University & Research (Marine Research) , Deltares and Waardenburg Ecology, with support from NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and advisory from the SeaCURE project at the University of Exeter. With a budget of €450K, this project will assess impacts and efficiency of scaled-up Direct Ocean Carbon Capture (DOCC) projects by using a combination of literature review, laboratory & mesocosm experiments, and ocean modeling. This will inform safe designs of future projects, in line with our commitment to ensuring ocean health. Stay tuned for more details! 🔹 We’re thrilled to share that we’ve been awarded the CIEIF grant ($75k) to support our efforts by strengthening environmental impact assessments, predictive ocean modeling, and stakeholder engagement through partnerships, reinforcing our commitment to ocean health and responsible deployment. 🔗 Want to learn more? It’s a wrap at CO2 Value Europe Days 🇪🇺 Hosted by TNO, Fluor Corporation, and CO2 Value Europe, this year’s event at The Park in Rijswijk brought together innovators and industry leaders for inspiring discussions, structured networking, and a lively social program, sparking new collaborations across the Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) community. 💡 A highlight was the mini exhibition, where members and partners showcased breakthrough technologies. We presented how our Direct Ocean Capture (DOC) technology provides captured CO₂ as a feedstock for concrete mineralisation, unlocking durable carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits — and as an input for alternative fuels such as SAFs and green methanol. ⚗️🌍 Our CTO, Maarten Oudshoorn and Founder's Associate, Zamin Syed took part in insightful discussions on the future of CCU in the Netherlands and across the EU, including the policy pathways needed to accelerate deployment 🇳🇱 As the EU scales its carbon removal and CCU efforts, we emphasised the need for DOC to be recognised alongside Direct Air Capture (DAC) in CCU policy, particularly in regions with limited land availability and vast coastline, where the ocean can play a central role in CDR and CO₂ feedstock. A big thank you to the CO2 Value Europe team for their continued policy leadership and tireless efforts to strengthen the CCU ecosystem across Europe. 🙏 #CO2ValueEurope #CCU #DOC #DAC #CarbonRemoval #OceanTech #Sustainability #Innovation #ClimateAction #SeaO2

We’re excited to share that Isometric’s Direct Ocean Capture & Storage (DOCS) Protocol has been officially certified, a defining milestone for marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR). The DOCS Protocol defines the world’s first science-based, publicly reviewed framework for projects that remove and permanently store CO₂ through Direct Ocean Capture (DOC). It introduces a robust Monitoring, Reporting & Verification (MRV) system that combines direct measurements with ocean modelling to track CO₂ uptake and ensure permanence. We’re proud that the SeaO2 MRV team (Dr. Daan Reijnders and Gerianne Terlouw), together with our DOC peers, contributed to its development. As one of the first project developers to sign up to issue carbon removal credits under the certified DOCS Protocol, SeaO2 reaffirms its commitment to transparency, scientific integrity, and responsible ocean-based carbon removal. 🌍We’re grateful to Isometric for leading this important effort and to our peers across the mCDR community for their collaboration in setting this new benchmark!
Isometric has certified the Direct Ocean Capture and Storage (DOCS) Protocol following a comprehensive public consultation. The ocean is the largest carbon reservoir on the Earth's surface, storing around 50 times more carbon than the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide naturally dissolves into the ocean’s surface through a process called equilibration. DOCS leverages this process by drawing carbon dioxide out of seawater, enabling the ocean to absorb more from the atmosphere. DOCS has significant potential to scale, by harnessing the ocean’s vast carbon storage capacity. It can also help address ocean acidification, potentially benefiting local marine ecosystems. The protocol was developed in line with the Isometric Standard, through collaboration between Isometric’s in-house Science Team and reviewers from the independent Science Network of more than 300 academic experts. Leading DOCS suppliers Captura, CarbonBlue, and SeaO2 provided extensive feedback during development and are the first suppliers signed up to issue credits under the protocol. Find out more at the link in the comments.
