⭐️ Such a pleasure to have been interviewed by Olena for this article! ➡️ Check out both her substack, and the article below, for some deep insights on the future Maritime theatre. ✅️ Including: where Europe currently stands and its future challenges (technological, doctrinal, legislative), how cooperation between nations will be vital in ensuring our future maritime strategic edge, and how Ukraine stands as a "lighthouse" on our ways there.

Naval drones are an outstanding tool for Ukraine in its fight against Russia. However, Russia can use the same technology against those it considers its “adversaries.” The Russians’ ultimate goal with their naval drone program appears to be the creation of asymmetric, disruptive threats. If the war were ever to spill over into a direct confrontation with NATO, one clear objective would be to use naval drones to threaten critical infrastructure — damaging energy networks and disrupting shipping. When I met with Rui Costa ⚓, a former Portuguese Navy officer, board member of the Royal Netherlands Society of Marine Engineers, I intended to focus on Ukraine’s naval drone exports. However, our conversation soon shifted toward the growing maritime threats posed by Russia. In the end, we reached a shared conclusion: NATO countries must prepare not only for aerial threats but also for those emerging from the sea. 🔗 Read the article: https://lnkd.in/d_ZNMec5

🌊 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗹: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝘆𝗲𝗿 Europe is racing to build a “drone wall” against low-cost UAVs coming from the east. But airspace is only half the story. The greatest vulnerabilities lie underwater: subsea cables, pipelines, wind farms, and naval bases. Underwater drones and diver-delivered payloads are nearly invisible to patrols and radars. This is where OptiBarrier comes in. 🔹 Persistent: 24/7 passive seabed listening that never reveals its position 🔹 Real-time: Immediate alerts, not minutes of delay 🔹 Wide-area: Coverage that extends over 100 km offshore 🔹 Reliable: No electronics in the wet end, ensuring uptime and lower OPEX OptiBarrier turns the seabed into a silent early-warning network, giving nations and operators the time they need to intercept, verify, and deter threats before they reach critical assets. Last week I had the privilege of exchanging ideas - and sharing some of my own - with people coming from different background, working in different countries, companies, institutes or elsewhere, but all have a similar goal: making unmanned systems better. I've visited both the Navy and the Land&Air day, and learned a bunch from all people present - in addition to the great speakers of course. Would highly recommend the next edition of UNMANNED_X if you have a chance! Thanks to Rui Costa ⚓for the amazing organization!

⭐ 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗻 𝗔𝗠𝗔𝗭𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴! ⭐ 🪢 Still busy processing everything post-event, but so incredibly happy with our UNMANNED 2025 event in The Hague. 🇳🇱 🇺🇦 🇬🇧 🇵🇹 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 🇪🇸 🇦🇹 🇪🇪 🇨🇭 🇩🇰 ➡️ It still feels insane what such a small group of people, part-time, with some great support from the ecosystem, were able to build. ➡️ This project started off as a grass roots, non-profit initiative to democratize Education in Defence, and has now evolved into a genuine forum where end-users, industry, and academia can exchange ideas, identify cooperation opportunities and synergies, and tackle challenges together across borders and fields of technology. 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝘄𝗼 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀, 𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲𝗱: ✅ Challenges and opportunities for the Alliance & Partner nations in Unmanned systems and enabling technologies ✅ Organizational changes across end-users, agencies, academia, and industry, to meet the "evolutionary pressures" of modern (and future) battlefields ✅ Ecosystem-wide gaps, risks, and opportunities, within Defence Innovation enablement and EDT development and integration ✅ Success stories from across the Alliance & Partner Nations in Unmanned Systems and Enabling Technologies ✅ The importance of aligning technological horizons, and development goals, across nations and fields of technology, and the challenges within ➡️ So much more! A special thank-you to our sponsors, partners, staff, and engineering societies, without which this gathering would have been impossible: Optics11 - Fiber optic sensing solutions, Royal3D, Van Storm Recruitment, KNVTS, KIVI - Koninklijk Instituut Van Ingenieurs. To our amazing co-organizer Eric Schiphorst. And, most of all, to all our attendees and speakers, especially those who came from all over the world to join our circle (with a particular thank-you to our Ukrainian colleagues and friends 🇺🇦). #Defence #Innovation #Unmanned #TheHague #UNMANNED_X

Looking back at the UNMANNED_X! Last week, Royal3D had the exciting opportunity not only to sponsor but also to actively participate in the UNMANNED_X symposium in The Hague. This two-day international event brought together leading experts, innovators, and professionals from across Europe to share insights on the development of unmanned systems and the critical role of defence innovation. As part of the program, Royal3D was proud to introduce the topic of 3D printing as a smart and future-proof choice for the production of USVs. Our 3D printing engineer, Bob De Reus, delivered an engaging presentation highlighting the many advantages of adopting additive manufacturing in this field. He emphasized benefits such as fast delivery, flexibility of design, cost efficiency, the ability to quickly replace or repair components, and the speed with which production can be scaled up. Bob also addressed how 3D printing opens the door to greater design flexibility and sustainability by reducing material waste and enabling lightweight yet robust structures. This resonates strongly with the defence sector’s ongoing pursuit of efficiency, adaptability, and resilience in a rapidly evolving world. Being part of such a dynamic exchange of knowledge and innovation was a valuable experience for Royal3D. The symposium provided a platform not only to showcase our expertise but also to learn from global leaders who are shaping the future of unmanned technologies. We look forward to continuing the conversation and collaborating on new opportunities where 3D printing can make a lasting impact. Great to be part of UNMANNED_X last week in the Hague. A big thank you to Rui Costa ⚓ for the invitation and for offering a platform to talk about Kraken Technology Group’s disruptive maritime technologies. The event itself was excellent. A genuine forum where end-users, industry, and academia could challenge each other, exchange ideas, and align on what it really takes to bring unmanned systems into service. One theme kept surfacing: operator trust. At sea, no amount of specs or slides will deliver that, only repetitions in real conditions do. And just as operators need to trust their tools, adversaries only “trust” deterrence when disruptive innovation is rapidly adopted, fielded, and iterated. The playbook is simple: field what works, then improve and scale. Fast.
