Vitol is a leader in the energy sector with a presence across the spectrum; from oil to power, renewables and carbon.
Over ons
We are a leader in the energy sector with a presence across the spectrum; from oil through to power, renewables and carbon credits. Every day we use our expertise to distribute energy around the world. We source from producers, refiners and intermediaries and deliver to refineries, utilities, airlines and retail distribution networks as well as wholesalers and other traders. We manage the physical risk associated with moving energy. Our business is global: we trade over 7 million barrels per day of crude oil and products and charter around 6,000 ship voyages a year. We also use our technical expertise to manage a global network of energy infrastructure that we deploy to help meet supply and demand flows worldwide. Our trading and logistical expertise is supported by a suite of proprietary technology applications that we build and maintain in-house. From more than 40 offices worldwide, we seek to add value across the energy supply chain, including deploying our scale and market understanding to help facilitate the energy transition. To date, we have committed over $2 billion of capital to renewable projects and sustainable energy solutions. The focus of our business is changing, and we are always looking for new people to help build the company for the next decade and beyond. We are a flat organisation that has a collaborative and entrepreneurial ethos. Vitol’s people are empowered to own their decisions and take responsibility for their actions. With just a few weeks until #MEPC83, we thought it timely to share our animated explainer on co-processed, sustainability attached, and regulatory compliant fuel (VLSFO or LSMGO). Molecularly identical with its fossil cousin, co-processed advanced biofuels meet the sustainability and regulatory requirements to reduce the #GHG fuel intensity. As competition for biofuels from road transport and aviation intensifies, and significantly more bio feedstocks are needed in the bio bunker pool to meet maritime sector decarbonisation regulatory targets in coming years, Vitol’s co-processed, sustainability attached VLSFO allows a wider range of feedstocks to be added into the maritime pool and offers ship owners and operators a simple way to comply with increasingly stringent decarbonisation regulations. VPI is set to develop more that 700MW of utility-scale battery storage in Germany through a joint venture with Noveria Energy. Read more in today's Bloomberg article: https://lnkd.in/epQ_DQMX
VPI, the power company backed by trading giant Vitol Group, could invest more than €600 million ($700 million) to develop a gigawatt-scale portfolio of battery storage sites in Germany, Chief Executive Office Jorge Pikunic told Bloomberg News in an interview. The surge in renewable power generation across Europe has led to huge price swings, at times even turning negative during low-demand periods on sunny or windy days. This volatility has attracted trading firms and utilities to invest in battery projects, which can store power when it’s cheap and sell it later when demand — and prices — rise. VPI recently signed a joint venture with Noveria Energy to develop five battery storage projects in Germany totaling 700 megawatts. That’s in addition to another 300 megawatts already under development in the country. “Germany is interesting for us because it’s the largest power market in Europe and because the need there is more for wholesale optimization rather than ancillary services,” Pikunic said, referring to buying and supplying power to the grid rather than supporting functions like frequency regulation. As we reach the autumnal equinox, we are looking back at this year’s record #solar output in Western Europe and some of the drivers. In the 2010s, regional solar capacity additions averaged 10 GW per year. However, the pace of installation accelerated as the energy crisis unfolded in 2022 and households sought to limit their electricity bills. Over recent years, annual growth has exceeded 40 GW as residential deployment has given way to larger scale developments spurred by real term cost reductions and government incentives. This additional capacity, in combination with high levels of solar radiation this year – the 4th highest in Western Europe for the last 30 years – has supported the near 22% (y-y) gain in solar output. #EnergyTransition #Renewables

Great session earlier today focused on #biofuels and hosted by Lloyd's Register as part of London International #Shipping Week. Ian Butler, Head of energy transition for shipping, Vitol was part of the panel discussion on the ‘Opportunities and challenges of biofuels’ Amongst the challenges to scaling biofuels, Ian highlighted the competition from road and air for feedstock. However this also presents an opportunity for the shipping industry to innovate by using feedstocks that other transport sectors are unable to. It’s something that Vitol has been piloting with co-processing; a process that produces sustainability attached VLSFO (or LSMGO) which is molecularly identical to the conventional fuel but with sustainability attached and ASTM D6866 tested. It’s also feasible to align the level of sustainability directly with any compliance requirements. A gateway to using a range of feedstocks without direct competition from road and air, it presents a real opportunity for biofuels at scale for shipping. This is particularly pertinent as we move into 2028 with the introduction of the #IMO mid-term measures when global supply is likely to increase – but so is competition. Now available through #VitolBunkers, for more on our co-processed VLSFO visit https://lnkd.in/gadxCsdv #LISW25 #EnergyTransition #CoProcessed #VLSFO Syed Ammar Hussaini
