NIRF Rankings released this week. This year, NIRF introduced penalty for retractions. Closer look at the data however shows that the penalties are imperceptible and erratic. Some universities with highest retraction rates in the world* have increased their research score massively (over 20%). This begs the question whether they were penalised, and if yes, how much? NIRF should release the list of penalties for universities in the interest of transparency and fairness. In its current mild form, the penalty is unlikely to have any effect on the universities. Today has been one of those rare days when I have been able to spend time focusing on research with my brilliant co-authors, and in particular with Tiago Cavalcanti in the beautiful Trinity College Cambridge and with Hongyu Nian on Zoom. Check out our latest work with Tiago Cavalcanti (University of Cambridge), Hongyu Nian (Antai College of Economics & Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University) and Haitao Yin (上海交通大学), where we highlight the significant challenges that #air #pollution has for #firms, particularly in terms of #human capital accumulation and #innovation capacity: https://lnkd.in/eNmV9ZFc Our findings demonstrate that prolonged exposure to poor air quality substantially diminishes the quality of firm-level R&D human capital, notably reducing the presence of #employees with advanced degrees such as PhDs and master’s degrees. This loss is most acute in small and medium-sized #enterprises and within high-tech #industries like #chemical, #pharmaceutical, and #automobile sectors. Moreover, we show that the quantity and quality of innovations are adversely affected by how air pollution affects firm-level R&D human capital. To counteract these adverse effects, firms in #polluted areas have adopted a range of adaptive #strategies: (1) Externally, they increase investment in #knowledge acquisition from #technology markets and collaboration with research institutions. (2) Internally, they enhance #welfare benefits for their R&D workforce and allocate more resources toward advanced experimental instruments. Although these strategies are effective by creating high R&D values, we do find that, given the same magnitude of expenditure on the purchased technology and experimental instrument, firms create less R&D values in the polluted areas, compared with their counterparts in the clean areas. Moreover, we show that large firms tend to benefit more from external collaborations, whereas smaller firms face limitations in adopting these approaches, further exacerbating the innovation gap in polluted regions. Our results highlight the vital importance of internal human capital in complementing external technological investments. For firms in #environmentally challenged areas, strategic investments in human capital are crucial. The pollution-induced deficit in human capital poses a significant challenge, necessitating both internal and external strategies to sustain innovation. However, the diminished effectiveness of these strategies in polluted #environments suggests a need to reconsider location choices and prioritize sustainable practices to protect and enhance human capital.
