The 70% of Emissions You’re Probably Not Tracking. Most companies talk about “reducing emissions,” but few truly understand where those emissions come from. That’s where the Scope 1, 2, and 3 framework comes in — the global standard for measuring carbon footprints across the entire value chain: 🔹 Scope 1 – Direct Emissions These are the emissions your company directly controls — from vehicles, boilers, and on-site energy use. 🔹 Scope 2 – Indirect Energy Emissions These come from the electricity, steam, heating, or cooling you purchase. You don’t produce them, but you cause them through energy consumption. 🔹 Scope 3 – Value Chain Emissions This is the big one — often over 70% of a company’s total footprint. It includes everything from business travel and supplier operations to how customers use and dispose of your products. Why It Matters: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Understanding your full emissions picture — from upstream suppliers to downstream customers — is the first step to real climate action. Rolling back agreed upon directional commitments and guiding rules undermines not just the EU Green Deal, but Europe’s long-term competitiveness and credibility. Circular solutions and local innovation rely on strong data and policy coherence. Security is ultimately about deep, structural resilience.
