Led by keynote speaker Esther Mollema, we explored practical ways to speak up, challenge bias, and lead with authenticity. This care home just cracked the loneliness epidemic. I cannot clap my hands harder. At Humanitas in Deventer, students live rent-free, in exchange for spending at least 30 hours each month engaging with the seniors, whether by sharing meals, having conversations, or simply keeping them company. This is placemaking in practice, at its best. And this is what happens when you ask - what else can a space be for? The statistics tell the story: - 940,000 older people in the UK are often lonely - 16-29 year olds are 2x as likely to feel lonely as over 70s - Nearly all students felt lonely during the last academic year You'd assume this system is designed for the elderly. But its genius lies in recognising that both generations face the same problem - loneliness. So instead of treating them separately, they created a system where both benefit. This is what I call the rhythm of a place. Every great space has a natural flow - times when people arrive, gather, eat, rest, and connect. Most care homes ignore this rhythm. They become sterile waiting rooms. But Humanitas designed theirs around shared moments… breakfast conversations, evening meals, weekend activities. The rhythm creates dozens of natural touchpoints where relationships can form. The students aren't visitors. They're residents. They shop for groceries, cook dinner, watch TV - all alongside their elderly neighbours. It's ordinary life, shared. Culture becomes the connector through three design tools that most places overlook: - Routine - predictable moments that create familiarity and trust - Shared time - not scheduled activities, but overlapping daily routines  - Presence - being in the same space, available for spontaneity This approach reframes the role of a care home from a passive service to an active community hub. The lessons are huge. Loneliness won’t be solved with leaflets or campaigns - it's solved through systems that naturally bring people together. The 'place' isn't the building - it's the network of people, rituals, and shared experiences that fill it. Imagine applying this thinking to student halls, co-living spaces, or new housing developments. This is a blueprint for designing spaces that fight isolation by design. Why can't we see more of this everywhere?

The Biggest Learning From Hosting 5 Leadership Dinners 👇 Over the past few months, we’ve welcomed more than 80+ People & Culture leaders across Amsterdam and Berlin to our Behind The Mask dinners. The biggest learning? Leaders are craving spaces where they can drop the corporate mask and connect on a human level. A consistent pattern emerged: leaders arrived nervous, uncertain, or guarded and left inspired, confident, and open. What shifted wasn’t performance or framework, but unmasking circles, shared stories, and honest conversations that reminded them they are not alone, and they don't have to be. Key takeaways: 1.
