The Costa Concordia salvage began with the urgent task of removing nearly 2 million liters of heavy diesel from her 17 fuel tanks. Dutch salvage firm SMIT International led the work, starting January 26, 2012. Using a crane barge, divers drilled into tanks, fitted valves, and heated the sludge-like oil so it could be pumped out and replaced with seawater. The first six tanks—holding more than half the fuel—were tackled first. Despite winter weather, the wreck’s position along the sheltered side of Giglio Island allowed the job to finish successfully. By March 25, 2012, all fuel had been extracted, removing the immediate environmental threat. Attention then turned to the wreck itself. On February 3, 2013, Costa Cruises confirmed the ship would not be dismantled in place but instead refloated and removed as one piece. The operation required designing the largest maritime salvage ever attempted. Engineers built an underwater platform and attached massive sponsons to the hull, which were later flooded to roll the ship upright in the “parbuckling” maneuver. Once upright, the sponsons were pumped with air to lift the liner so she could be towed away. This record-breaking project was hailed as a triumph of marine engineering, ensuring the Concordia’s removal with minimal further damage to Giglio’s fragile coastline. "💡 Engr. When we talk about Ceramic Coating in the yachting industry, most people think about exterior hulls and paintwork. But did you know it can also be used on top of Paint Protection Film (PPF)? And on marble and stone surfaces, where those tiny natural openings are not suitable for PPF application? (I’ll save that one for another post) Where we really love Ceramic Coating is on top of PPF because: ✓ Cleaning becomes quicker and easier ✓ It helps PPF stay in tip-topp condition for longer ✓ It repels fingerprints so they hardly stick (huge win for interior crew) Ceramic coating doesn’t replace PPF, but together they’re the best way to protect those beautiful interior and exterior surfaces.
