🇳🇱 🇨🇦 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐰𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐝𝐚: 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 At the University of Twente, we believe innovation thrives through collaboration. That is why we are pleased to share that Novel-T and Velocity, the entrepreneurship centre at the University of Waterloo in Canada, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen ties between our ecosystems. The ambition is clear: to explore how we can create a transatlantic bridge that helps early-stage founders validate faster, scale smarter and connect with both European and North American markets. For startups, this could mean turning research into real-world impact with the right support on both sides of the ocean. The agreement was formalised during Enschede Slush'D. It builds on the partnership we already enjoy with the University of Waterloo and marks a new step in connecting our innovation communities across borders, underlining Twente’s role as a hub where global innovation meets local strength.

AI’s Next Battleground: Your Browser I contributed to an article in this morning's Het Financieele Dagblad about a new front in the AI race: the web browser. For years, browsers like Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox have been stable and almost invisible gateways to the internet. Now AI is changing that. Start-ups such as Perplexity and The Browser Company, as well as giants like OpenAI, are building AI-first browsers to get closer to users from the very moment they go online. The logic is simple. Control the browser and you control the starting point for billions of people, along with their data and habits. For Google, integrating AI into Chrome could also disrupt its $250+ billion ad business if AI answers replace traditional search clicks. The browser is no longer just a tool. It was a privilege to be interviewed by Eindhovens Dagblad journalist Mascha Geerts-Prins, together with Henry Chesbrough, about how the #Brainport region leads the way in #OpenInnovation. 🚀 See the link below for the complete article, but some key insights are: ➡️ Community building is key: Open innovation is fundamentally about creating communities where "most of the smart people work for someone else", which is exactly the opportunity we need to embrace. ➡️ From closed labs to open ecosystems: Philips' transformation of the High Tech Campus based on Henry's 2003 book shows how powerful this shift can be, as it triggered turning an internal R&D facility into a thriving innovation ecosystem. ➡️ Smart knowledge management: It's not about opening everything, but finding the balance between sharing and protecting knowledge so that 1+1=3, in which patents, licenses, and strategic cooperation can all play crucial roles. ➡️ The quadruple helix: Beyond the traditional triple helix of university-business-government, we're now seeing society itself as an active participant in innovation, which is essential for tackling today's complex societal challenges. As Henry perfectly summarized: "Open innovation benefits companies, people, and society as a whole." 🌿 Become a sustainable UX Designer. But why? The digital products we create have a huge potential negative environmental & societal impact. By focussing on the user we leave out all the other actors (human & non-human) that are impacted by what we create. The convenience of the user always comes at a price that is paid somewhere else - by other people, by the environment or by future generations. This gives us not only the responsibility but also the opportunity to design more sustainable digital services and products by default. It's our decisions and actions - small and big - that directly influence how good or bad a product is. And we not only do that for the good of the planet and the future (though that should be enough..), it is also already a business case: Less server costs, more successful products and meeting future regulations are only three examples how sustainable design and UX directly influence the business case. Designing sustainable digital products means designing successful products. But how do we do that? We have various ways for impact through the whole design and build process of a digital product or service: 🌿 Making negative impacts visible by setting the digital products we design in context of its surrounding eco system 🌿 Breaking down the negative impacts down to an actionable level. For example 🌿 Using sustainable Design and UX tactics like Carbon Friendly Design, Positive behavioral Design, Adaptive Design or Content-/Data-Lifetime Design 🌿 Establish an ongoing process as part of your & your teams design routine to make Sustainability default #SustainableUX is the foundation to design sustainable digital Products and Experiences. The #SUXFramework offers a step by step guideline how to establish and execute sustainable UX in your day to day work as well as your team. It is based on my work over the past years in digital sustainability and in helping to establish Sustainable UX in the community. The tools and methods of the SUX Framework are the result of my practical work in the field and at SUX - The Sustainable UX Network. The Masterclass "Become a Sustainable UX Designer" teaches you everything you need to bring sustainable UX into your work as a UX Designer. No matter if you are Senior, Junior or Design Manager.
