🚀𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗪𝗢 | 𝗖𝗼𝗺-𝗜𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗲-𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗿𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗥𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆🔥 Excited to share that Com-Impure-Iron, an exciting new project led by XiaoCheng Mi (TU/e Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Shuxia Tao (TU/e Department of Applied Physics and Science Education), has been awarded funding through NWO’s Open Technology Programme! This interdisciplinary initiative brings together the Thermo-Fluids Engineering (TFE) group (Mechanical Engineering) and the Center for Computational Energy Research (Applied Physics), both part of EIRES at TU Eindhoven. 👏 A special shout-out to Prof. Peter Bobbert for initiating this collaboration and uniting complementary research strengths across TU/e. 🤝 The project team also includes Conrad Hessels, Giulia Finotello, Jeroen van Oijen, Roy Hermanns, and @Geert Brocks — bringing together deep expertise across combustion science, optical diagnostics, material characterization, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations, and multiphase combustion modeling. 🔬 Com-Impure-Iron is a great example of EIRES-enabled multidisciplinary collaboration, bridging: • 🧪 Energy Generation & Storage • 🏭 Greening Process Industry • 💻 Computational Energy Research …and linking the Hydrogen & Metal Power and AI & Energy programs. We’re proud to collaborate with a strong and diverse consortium spanning industry and academia — from the metal processing sector to advanced software development — including: ArcelorMittal, Nyrstar, Metalot | Metal Power Community, Software for Chemistry & Materials, and UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain. 🌱 Why it matters: The Iron Power Cycle offers a clean, recyclable, carbon-free way to store and transport energy. This research focuses on the use of impure, cost-effective iron powder—sourced from ores and industrial waste. 🌡️ 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗘𝗜𝗥𝗘𝗦 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗚𝗘𝗡𝗜𝗨𝗦 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗮𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗺𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱 On 8 October, ahead of Nationaal Warmtecongres 2025, participants visited EIRES at the TU/e Campus to explore the role of innovation in the heat transition. TU/e Energy Coordinator Thijs Meulen presented the GENIUS project, highlighting the innovative thermal battery and heat-cold network of the campus energy infrastructure. This system enables sustainable, collective heating and cooling, a strong example of applied large scale system innovation in the built environment. Thanks to this system, we can continue to grow in the coming years.
