Update on Trade & Investment Opportunities in Hong Kong: Briefings this week during my visit to Invest Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Chinese Manufacturers' Association of Hong Kong centred on how the region is reinforcing its position as a gateway for trade, investment and financial services (not forgetting a significant market for NZ goods and services too) We discussed HK's new multi-faceted plan of extraordinary scale— from new residential and manufacturing construction projects (in the New Territories) to high-value art and precious metals storage, Hong Kong’s ambition to become a commodities trading hub, a major arts and culture precinct development for locals and tourists, and HK's expanded role as a promoter of all forms of manufacturing from China. The Greater Bay Area (GBA) — first announced by the Chinese central government in 2017 and formalised in 2019 — linking Hong Kong, Macau, and nine Guangdong cities including Shenzhen and Guangzhou, is progressing at speed. This region brings together 87 million consumers within about two and a half hours of Hong Kong, making it one of the world’s most dynamic economic zones. ExportNZ and BusinessNZ were pleased to host David Mahon, Executive Chairman of Mahon China, yesterday morning for an update on US–China trade dynamics, diplomatic positioning, and what New Zealand exporters should be doing to prepare for the foreseeable future. David spoke about China’s economic resilience, noting that its economy continues to grow faster than the US and Europe, while transitioning towards high-tech manufacturing, advanced services, and green technology. A particularly interesting insight was David’s view that the Chinese economy is less exposed to US trade policy than many assume, with the private sector having diversified away from the US since 2016. For New Zealand, David’s message was clear: 🔦 Act with independence and clarity, 🔎 Be pragmatic about the geopolitical environment, 🌏 Deepen relationships across Asia, and 🧭 Focus on the core values that underpin our credibility in the region. Conversations like these bring fresh perspectives and ensure New Zealand businesses are not only informed but also equipped to make strategic decisions in a rapidly changing world. This moring, we had the privilege of hearing from David Mahon, one of New Zealand’s most respected commentators on China and global affairs. His insights were both sobering and energising for those of us working at the intersection of trade, business, and geopolitics. Some of David’s insights included: • We are living through a major global power shift – with Asia, led by China, emerging as the world’s economic centre, while the U.S. enters a period of relative decline. • The U.S.–China relationship will remain tense, but interdependent. U.S. attempts to contain China have largely failed, as China has diversified and strengthened its position in Asia and beyond. • China’s economy, despite media headlines, continues to grow and transform – moving from property reliance to technology, advanced manufacturing, and services, with strong household savings and global competitiveness. • For New Zealand, credibility depends on pragmatism and independence. Our strength lies not in following Washington or Brussels, but in being a trusted and flexible Asia-Pacific economy. David’s challenge to NZ Exporters: Avoid being caught in rhetoric and alliances that don’t serve our long-term interests. Instead, lean into our history of independence, fairness, and creativity – values that continue to give New Zealand influence and opportunity in Asia.
