I took a first aid course last week. We learned how to help people in trouble. One of the things we learned was how to help someone who is choking. Our teacher gave us a useful sheet to help us remember the steps. Here's what she gave us:
FIRST AID FOR CHOKING
Signs that a person might be choking:
E The person cannot breathe, cough, or speak.
E The person makes an "I'm choking: sign with his or her hands.
E The person's lips turn blue.
Step 1. Ask, "Are you choking?"
Step 2. If the person signs "yes," step behind the person, and put your arms around his or her waist.
Step 3. Close one hand and hold it with the other. Place your hands just above the person's belly button.
Step 4. Pull sharply towards yourself.
Step 5. Repeat until the object comes out or the person can breathe.
