A quest for survival in a world without water
In the novel The Cloud Thief, Mara lives in a world severely damaged by the effects of climate change. The oceans dried up long ago, and only sand remains in their place. There is not enough water to support activities like farming or raising animals. To survive, communities must purchase clouds from the Cloud Factory.
Unfortunately, Mara's hometown, Withering-on-the-Sand-Sea, is not wealthy, and the price of clouds keeps going up. To make matters worse, Maras father is seriously ill. Mara believes that only access to water from clouds could improve his health.
