In early October (6-8, 2025), the 2nd ELLIS Coordinators’ Retreat took place in the Netherlands, hosted by the ELLIS unit Nijmegen, ELLIS Unit Delft and ELLIS unit Amsterdam. During this annual gathering, coordinators discussed ongoing organizational matters within the ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems network, shared upcoming plans, and explored ways to strengthen the connection between scientific research and industrial applications. The coordinator of ELLIS Unit Warsaw, Artur Kołodziejczyk-Skowron, had the opportunity to present the Warsaw unit and its host institution, IDEAS Research Institute, as well as to summarize the ELLIS Doctoral Symposium 2025 on Robust AI, organized by ELLIS Unit Warsaw in late August 2025. It was an inspiring meeting full of exchange, collaboration, and shared vision for the future of AI research in Europe 🤖🤝. 📸by: Albert Stevanus #ELLIS #AIresearch #Collaboration #Innovation #Networking #IDEASResearchInstitute

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Łukasz Kuciński - an outstanding researcher, a mentor to the younger generation of scientists, and a member of the ELLIS Unit Warsaw. For many of us, Łukasz was not only a long-time colleague but also a friend. He was distinguished not only by his brilliant mind but also by his open heart and sense of humor. His passing is an irreparable loss to the entire ML and AI research community in Poland. Today we accompany him on his final journey. Farewell, Łukasz. We shall not forget you!

🌍 Day 4 of EDS 2025 was dedicated to the social dimension of AI. We had the privilege to learn from Serge Belongie (“Narratives in the Modern Social Media Ecosystem”) and Nuria Oliver, PhD (“Towards a Fairer World With AI”). Their talks reminded us that while modern technologies bring incredible opportunities, they can also induce societal risks – from harmful narratives on social media to racial biases in vision models. Fortunately, AI itself can help us detect and mitigate these risks, making technology more fair, transparent, and trustworthy. 🤝✨ 👏 Congratulations to the winner of today’s poster session Olaf Dünkel - your research shows how the next generation of scientists is already shaping a more responsible future of AI. 🔬 Day 3 of EDS 2025 showed how close different fields of AI can be. Keynotes by Ewa Szczurek and Pau Rodriguez Lopez revealed a common question: 👉 How do we effectively control the generative process - whether the goal is a new antibiotic, a funny-looking wolf, or a ranting giraffe? 🧬🐺🦒 Later, our speakers Marek Cygan, Tomasz Trzcinski, Piotr Sankowski, and Pau Rodríguez López shared their experiences on moving from science to entrepreneurship - encouraging, but also warning about the challenges. The discussion was moderated by Daniel Marczak. 🚀 Thank you to all today’s speakers for sparking new perspectives and debates! 🙏 Our honorary patrons: Ministry of Digital Affairs of the Republic of Poland (Ministerstwo Cyfryzacji) Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Poland (Ministerstwo Finansów) Mayor of the Capital City of Warsaw (Grow with Warsaw) Polish Tourism Organisation (Polska Organizacja Turystyczna) Sponsors & Partners: Uniwersytet Warszawski, ML in PL • Embassy of Switzerland in Poland • ORLEN S.A. • G-Research • Google • Edu4Industry • Adra - AI-Data-Robotics-Association • fictionlab • Bosch Magyarország • ELIAS - European Lighthouse of AI for Sustainability • ELSA – European Lighthouse on Secure and Safe AI • ELLIS - European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems photos by: Damian Fużyński
