Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility

Initially I was annoyed at having to write a DEIA statement. As a mid level provider I do not have the power to tailor my practice or career the same as a physician. We are assigned what patients we will see and what research we participate in. Then I realized, I am actually annoyed at myself because it is my, not the institution’s responsibility to be mindful and ever cognizant of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility. Growing up I lived with refugee families from all over the world, we housed families while getting them set up with jobs, healthcare and housing. The racism and hurdles these families faced all was horrifying and I vowed to ensure that no matter what I did “when I grow up” I would be part of the solution. My previous employments focused on marginalized populations- home care for elderly, social worker for department of child and family, healthcare for the homeless…My current position does not and that is my fault. So thank you BU for making me write this statement and making me realize I have lost myself over the past few years and become complacent. I vow to do better in the future.
