Are Germany and Türkiye facing the same challenges when it comes to the future of their power distribution grids? At the renowned Energy is Future (EIF) meeting, taking place this week at Istanbul's Fair Centre, jointly with Fakir Hüseyin Erdoğan, from the industry association Elder, Volkan Yigit, PMP, Managing Partner at APlus Enerji, and Gustav Weber, Senior Expert at German Energy Agency (dena), and hosted by Lea-Valeska von Gall, Team leader at Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH (dena), as a moderator and under the sponsorship of Stefanie Seedig, Head of the Economic Department at the German Embassy in Ankara, we debated on this question. Two extensive dena studies shed light on the immense long-term capital demands of distribution grids in the two countries. According to these compared to today investments needs will rise by factor 2 until 2045 in Germany and even by factor 3 until 2038 in Türkiye. While inflation and two digit real interest rates provide currently an additional burden in Türkiye in both cases the drivers of the energy transformation are similar, which allows market players and regulators to learn a lot from each other e.g. when it comes to solutions to avoid a pure spend increase. Smart solutions in digitization and other innovation can have a significant impact, however requires some intense work and testing in the field. This is the reason why the Türkish-German Energy Partnership (Deutsch-Türkische Energiepartnerschaft) is so meaningful.
