Portuguese-speaking professionals are on the rise in the Luxembourg financial centre, marking a major shift from their presence in the sector a decade ago. Today, it is not uncommon to find these professionals in big4s, fund services, banks and many other services (perhaps less so in legal domains). In my view, there is a 50/50 mix of 2nd generation professionals and experienced/newly graduated individuals who leave Portugal (and Brazil) in search for better opportunities (we are 2 at LPEA!). Many are also coming as a result of regular visits from Portuguese universities (Católica, Nova). Speaking about Brazil's fund industry opening up further to investments abroad, LFF's CEO Tom Théobald stressed the Portuguese language now being an asset, representing a major shift, as until recently it had only been regarded as marginally relevant. 📈 In July, Portugal registered 32,422 new companies, a 0.8% increase compared to last year. This growth reflects the country's sustained entrepreneurial momentum, even in a challenging economic environment. 📍The North region led in new business registrations, followed by Oeste and Vale do Tejo. In contrast, Lisbon, the Algarve and Setúbal experienced declines in company creation. Business closures fell to 5,963, showing greater business resilience, while insolvencies dropped by 8.3%, particularly in the textile and fashion industries. 💼 These results underline Portugal's dynamic business environment and appeal for new ventures, with emerging opportunities across multiple sectors and regions. 🔍

On Monday, Mario Draghi sounded the alarm once again: Europe’s future role in the world depends on innovation, yet the pace of reform is far too slow. Only ~10% of the measures identified last year have actually been implemented. It is about this wake up call for Europe and Portugal that I shared my reflections in an article in Expresso: 🔹 Europe has a major gap to the US: fewer than 25% of unicorns, and fewer than a third of patent filings. 🔹 Fragmented markets and excessive bureaucracy push talent and private capital away, limiting our ability to generate and retain innovation. 🔹 Europe, and Portugal, need ambitious structural change — fewer barriers, a true single innovation market, and incentives to private funding. At Unicorn Factory Lisboa, we have been taking strong actions: helping scaleups grow internationally, connecting international ecosystems, and building communities around future-critical technologies, like AI. European institutions and national governments need to commit to real change urgently. PwC Portugal has advised IVC Evidensia, a British-Swedish group in veterinary care, on the acquisition of Clínica Veterinária 115 Animal in Olhão, Grupo SOSVET in Almada, and Clínica Veterinária do Castêlo in Maia. These three acquisitions represent another step in the group’s expansion plan in Portugal. PwC’s legal team, which coordinated the transaction, was led by Luís Pedro Oliveira (partner in corporate/M&A, pictured) and included Andreia Prado da Silva, Isadora Gus Camargo, Yelyzaveta Lemeshko, and Martim Mimoso, all lawyers in the same practice area. 🚀 Porto Leading Investor Euronext strengthens its footprint in the city   Euronext has inaugurated its new headquarters in the heart of Porto, in a fully renovated historic building that once housed the Faculty of Pharmacy. Described by CEO Stephane Boujnah as the group’s largest-ever real estate investment, the project will allow the company to expand its local team to between 600 and 700 people.   In just over 8 years, Euronext’s Porto technology and services centre has grown from fewer than 100 employees to nearly 500, making it the group’s third-largest location in Europe.   For Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, this expansion "confirms the strategic importance" of the city, demonstrating its ability to attract high-value international investment and compete on a European scale.
